Trans-Siberian Orchestra is rolling into Newark with two shows at Prudential Center on Dec. 26, 2026, bringing its expanded 30th anniversary production of The Ghosts of Christmas Eve to New Jersey as part of a tour that will crisscross North America with nearly 100 concerts in barely six weeks. The first performance kicks off at 3 p.m., with a second show following at 7:30 p.m., giving Essex County fans two chances in one day to catch the pyrotechnics, lasers, and towering light rigs the band is known for.
The Newark stop is one leg of a tour that, according to amNewYork, grew out of founder Paul O'Neill's 1996 vision for a progressive rock band meant to push genre boundaries. That year's debut record, Christmas Eve and Other Stories, included the now-iconic instrumental Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24 — a track that remains among the most downloaded holiday rock recordings ever, according to Wikipedia. The piece was inspired by Bosnian cellist Vedran Smailović, who famously played amid the siege of Sarajevo.
From Seven Shows to a Six-Week Sprint
TSO's touring story started small. The band played just seven shows on its first tour in 1999, the same report notes, before expanding to 70 shows the following year as word spread. Drummer Jeff Plate, who has been with the group since its inception and also plays with Savatage, credited Cleveland radio DJ Bill Lewis with encouraging O'Neill to take the show on the road in the first place, per the outlet's report.
To keep up with demand, O'Neill eventually formed two separate touring bands operating on different coasts — a structure that endures today as TSO East and TSO West, according to amNewYork. That dual-company setup is how the band now manages 96 shows across 56 North American markets in just six weeks, with this year's run opening with dual launches in Green Bay, Wisconsin, and Council Bluffs, Iowa.
A Jersey City Connection to the Centerpiece Story
The Ghosts of Christmas Eve, which forms the narrative spine of this year's Prudential Center shows, actually has New Jersey roots. The story first reached audiences as a 1999 Fox Family Channel television special starring Ossie Davis and Allie Sheridan, with Jewel as a guest performer, filmed at the historic Loew's Jersey Theatre in Jersey City, according to Wikipedia. The tale follows a runaway teenager who takes shelter inside an abandoned movie palace on Christmas Eve, and this year's touring version is billed as a continuation of the 2025 production, per amNewYork's report.
Plate described the current show as combining showmanship with O'Neill's music, noting it features a large-scale light show, a full band, multiple vocalists, pyrotechnics, and lasers, all built around that story. Lighting designer Brian Hartley oversees the visual spectacle, the outlet reports. Plate also said O'Neill wanted the production to entertain people regardless of music genre, age, or religion, and that TSO has become a holiday tradition for millions across North America and the world. Jon Oliva and guitarist Al Pitrelli round out the show's creative team.
Scale, Charity, and a Legacy That Outlived Its Founder
The band's catalog has real staying power: Christmas Eve and Other Stories has sold more than three million copies.
Beyond ticket sales, TSO has built a philanthropic footprint. Continuing a policy O'Neill established, the band donates at least $1 from every ticket sold to local causes and has contributed more than $20 million to charities across North America to date, according to The Music Universe.
The tour continues without the man who built it. O'Neill died at age 61 on April 5, 2017, in Tampa, Florida, due to chronic illness, according to Ultimate Classic Rock. Plate has said he is proud to continue O'Neill's legacy.
