A tractor-trailer hauling cooking oil flipped onto its side on northbound I-35 near 119th Street in Olathe early Wednesday, killing the person inside and triggering a highway shutdown that stretched nearly eight hours. The crash was reported around 2:30 a.m., and the tow company assessed the crash scene while the oil had not spread.
According to the FOX4KC, the tractor-trailer reportedly lost control on the highway for unknown reasons before flipping onto its side near the 119th Street interchange. The Kansas Highway Patrol initially reported that the person inside had suffered serious injuries, but the driver ultimately died in the crash, the station reported. FOX4 identified the driver as 25-year-old Jatin Kumar of Santa Clara, California, and said his family had been notified.
Kansas Highway Patrol administrative procedures keep preliminary online crash logs public for 14 to 30 days after an incident, and crash reports cost $5, per the Kansas Highway Patrol. What caused the truck to lose control in the first place — mechanical failure, driver fatigue, or a medical emergency — remains unknown.
Cooking Oil Spill on I-35
The rig was carrying cooking oil, and once it flipped, the liquid began leaking onto the northbound lanes. The tow company assessed the crash scene while the oil had not spread. Two lanes of northbound I-35 reopened in Olathe nearly eight hours after the crash.
The shutdown rippled across Johnson County's commuter network. The City of Overland Park's 2025 traffic-volume map shows counts as high as 52,300 vehicles a day on roads within the city, according to the City of Overland Park, underscoring the potential disruption from a major I-35 lane closure during the morning commute.
A Dangerous Stretch of Highway With a History of Deadly Crashes
Wednesday's rollover adds to a troubling run of fatal single-vehicle incidents along I-35 in Johnson County this year. Just two days earlier, 52-year-old Angela M. Carter of Olathe died on Oct. 5 when her SUV veered off northbound I-35 onto the 75th Street exit ramp, struck a guardrail, crossed several medians and landed in a ditch, according to an official crash log from the Kansas Highway Patrol detailed in prior Hoodline reporting.
It follows other fatal incidents in the area this year. On August 31, a 43-year-old Kansas City man died on northbound I-35 near 159th Street in Olathe after his Dodge Challenger struck a bridge pillar, Hoodline reported at the time. And on May 12, a fatal single-vehicle crash and fire on southbound I-35 at Lone Elm Road in Olathe killed one person and shut down the highway, as shown in video reporting by KSHB 41. Just over a week ago, a critical motorcycle collision on northbound I-35 in neighboring Overland Park also forced a complete highway closure and traffic diversions.
