A two-car crash outside an Amazon delivery station on Ellington Road in South Windsor sent two people to the hospital Wednesday morning, with one person trapped inside a vehicle. Firefighters and police received reports of the crash around 8:30 a.m., according to the South Windsor Fire Department.
The crash happened in front of the Amazon station at 240 Ellington Road, as reported by CT Insider. First responders extricated one person trapped inside a vehicle a few minutes after arriving, with Manchester Ambulance Service assisting; Manchester Ambulance then transported a patient to the hospital. Officials said both people involved sustained minor injuries. Separately, Patch reported that one of the injured was transported to St. Francis Hospital and the other to Hartford Hospital.
A Logistics Hub With a History of Serious Wrecks
The crash site sits at the driveway of a sprawling 182,628-square-foot last-mile delivery station that Amazon launched in September 2023 and that was sold to a real estate investor for $20.74 million in March 2024, per the Hartford Business Journal.
Wednesday's crash is not the first serious collision on this part of Ellington Road. Back in June 2022, the roadway was shut down between Chapel Street and Pleasant Valley School after a South Windsor police cruiser struck a utility pole and the officer was hospitalized, FOX 61 reported at the time.
Ellington Road and Route 30
Ellington Road is also designated Route 30, which intersects Route 5.
State officials have taken some steps to address safety on the corridor. In August 2024, crews carried out a 72-hour complete detour on Route 30 to reconstruct a freight rail crossing near Route 5, a project aimed specifically at improving roadway safety and passage, Patch reported at the time.
