Part of a Broader Pattern of Teen Robbery Cases in San José
This isn't an isolated case for the department this year. A July report by CBS News San Francisco described six arrests, including four juveniles as young as 15, tied to a string of armed robberies that included a May 23 holdup on South King Road in East San José involving five suspects and a firearm. In that case too, Robbery Unit detectives leaned on license plate readers to identify a suspect vehicle and zero in on a 15-year-old they called the primary suspect, later recovering the firearm allegedly used in the robberies during a search of his home.
Just weeks before that, in July, two 15-year-old boys were accused of robbing online sellers at gunpoint during sales meetups in the same San José neighborhood, four days apart, as reported by the East Bay Times. Police arrested those boys on July 14 in San José and Milpitas and booked them into the same juvenile hall on suspicion of robbery. In the earlier of those two incidents, the newspaper reported, a second boy emerged with a gun and the pair stole the seller's items before fleeing. Robbery-unit detectives in that case identified the teenagers as suspects and obtained arrest and search warrants before taking them into custody.
License plate reader technology was used in several robbery investigations, and police asked the public for information in some cases.
Anyone with information about this case or similar incidents is asked to contact SJPD. The Silicon Valley Crime Stoppers program offers a cash reward for information that leads to an arrest.
