Two men showed up at a Portland hospital with gunshot wounds early Saturday after a disturbance near Southwest 3rd Avenue and West Burnside Street, and police ended up using a helicopter and K-9 units to chase down four suspects clear across town in Northeast Portland. Officers never actually caught up with the fleeing vehicle on the ground — they let the Air Support Unit do the work instead.
Gunshots Heard, But No One Found at the Scene
According to KOIN, Portland police responded to reports of a disturbance near Southwest 3rd Avenue and West Burnside Street and heard gunshots, but found no suspects or victims when they arrived. Officers from the Central Precinct and the Entertainment District Detail were already in the area, since that stretch of downtown sits within the Old Town Entertainment District, where dedicated patrols are posted during weekend overnight hours because of heavy foot traffic and late-night venue activity, per the City of Portland. Official records show the call came in around 12:20 a.m. Saturday and the case was assigned under number 26-288413.
Two men with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds ended up getting themselves to a hospital in private vehicles rather than waiting for an ambulance, the station's report notes. Their current medical condition hasn't been detailed beyond that initial description.
Chase Breaks Off at I-84, Picks Back Up From the Air
Officers soon spotted a possible suspect vehicle leaving downtown on Interstate 84 and tried to stop it, but the suspects fled at high speeds, according to the same KOIN account. Rather than chase the car on the ground, police leaned on the Air Support Unit to track it from above — a tactic spelled out under Portland Police Bureau Directive 0630.05, which instructs officers to limit high-speed ground pursuits and instead rely on aerial tracking until ground units can set a perimeter, per the City of Portland.
The helicopter followed the car to Northeast 58th Avenue and Northeast Flanders Street, where it stopped and its four occupants ran off into the neighborhood on foot. Officers from PPB's Central, East, and North Precincts then joined K-9 units to surround the area, according to KGW. Police ultimately found and detained four men in the neighborhood, per PPB. Portland police have asked anyone with information about the shooting to come forward.
A Familiar Playbook for Portland Police
This isn't the first time PPB has broken off a ground chase in favor of air support. In June 2026, officers disengaged from a dangerous pursuit across Interstate 205 and used the Air Support Unit to track two fleeing suspects until K-9 and ground units caught them near Portland International Airport, KGW reported at the time. PPB also ran targeted “Summer Cool Down” missions over the summer that paired the Air Support Unit with tire-deflation devices to intercept violent-crime suspects without resorting to high-speed chases, according to the City of Portland.
The case has been handed to PPB's Enhanced Community Safety Team, a specialized unit created to investigate all injury shootings, identify violent offenders, and head off retaliatory cycles of gun violence, the City of Portland says. That team, along with the Focused Intervention Team, operates under Portland Ceasefire, a focused-deterrence model run in partnership with the National Institute for Criminal Justice Reform that pairs direct law enforcement with bedside hospital intervention for shooting victims.
Part of a Broader Downward Trend
The shooting adds to a run of late-night violence downtown — Hoodline previously reported on a stabbing in the nearby North Park Blocks and on a shooting near the Hollywood Transit Center last month. Still, citywide numbers suggest gun violence overall has been easing. Portland recorded 525 shooting incidents in 2025, a 30 percent drop from 747 in 2024 and the city's lowest annual total since 2019, according to data cited by KATU. Citywide homicides similarly fell from a peak of 96 in 2022 to 73 in 2023 and kept declining through 2024, per figures compiled by Omnilert.
Whether any of the four detained men will face formal charges remains unknown, and the motive behind the disturbance hasn't been disclosed. Police have not released further updates on the investigation beyond the request for witnesses to come forward.
