Two people were shot Wednesday night near Rainier Avenue South and South Holden Street in Seattle's Brighton neighborhood, with one victim hit in the leg and the other in the wrist. Police say both injuries are non-life-threatening, and the circumstances that led to the shooting remain unclear.
According to FOX 13 Seattle, Seattle police said the shooting happened around 10 p.m. near the busy Rainier Valley intersection. Investigators are now trying to determine whether the shooting actually took place aboard a King County Metro bus, the station reports, though that detail has not been confirmed. Officers blocked off the scene afterward and asked the public to steer clear while the area was processed.
As first reported by KING 5, the Seattle Department of Transportation urged drivers to find alternate routes while police activity blocked off a portion of Rainier Avenue South and South Holden Street. Law enforcement had not released further details about the victims as of the station's report.
A History of Violence at the Same Intersection
This isn't the first time this particular stretch of Rainier Valley has drawn police attention. Back in September 2019, detectives investigated a shooting at the same intersection of Rainier Avenue South and South Holden Street, in which a man suffered life-threatening gunshot wounds outside a nearby business, according to the Seattle Police Department. More recently, in April 2026, the department's Gun Violence Reduction Unit investigated a drive-by shooting elsewhere in Rainier Valley that injured a young man and shut down multiple intersections, per a separate Seattle Police Department blotter post. It is not established whether Wednesday's shooting is connected to either of those earlier incidents.
County Data Shows Shootings Trending Down
Zoomed out, the countywide numbers paint a picture of declining gun violence even as individual incidents like Wednesday's continue to rattle neighborhoods. King County recorded 204 shots-fired incidents in the first quarter of 2026, a 28% drop from the same period in 2025 and the lowest first-quarter total since 2020, according to KOMO News. The same report counted nine fatal shooting victims and 42 nonfatal victims countywide during that period, with shots-fired incidents down 54% and fatal shootings down 61% compared with their highest recent levels in 2024.
That report also found that Seattle accounted for roughly 49% of all King County shootings in the first quarter, while south King County made up about 44%. The county-level figures do not establish a specific trend for Brighton or Rainier Valley, but they offer context for how Wednesday's shooting fits into the broader regional picture of gun violence, which has been easing even as it remains a persistent concern for South Seattle corridors like Rainier Avenue.
No arrests or suspect information had been released as of Wednesday night, and the cause of the shooting remained unclear. Police continued processing the scene after the area was cordoned off, with no word yet on how long the closure would last.
