A 15-year-old boy suffered a broken hip after a driver struck him while he was crossing the street with his brother in Union City, then drove off without stopping. Police are now asking anyone with dash-camera or home security footage from that night to come forward as they hunt for the vehicle involved.
The crash happened at the intersection of Regents Boulevard and Kenwood Street, with the Union City Police Department Traffic Unit pinpointing the collision to approximately 8:07 p.m. on September 28, 2026, according to a report from SFGATE. The Mercury News reports the boy was crossing with his brother when the driver hit him and kept going. He was taken to an area trauma center, treated for his injuries, and later released.
Investigators Zero In On a Honda CR-V
Union City police obtained surveillance video from a nearby home, but low-light conditions made it impossible to read the vehicle's license plate, according to the Mercury News. Despite that setback, officers said the vehicle appeared to be a newer-model Honda CR-V, based on its distinct body shape and rear taillight configuration in the footage, the same report notes. The vehicle was last seen traveling westbound on Kenwood Street.
In this case, low-light conditions made it impossible for investigators to read the vehicle's license plate.
What the Law Says About Fleeing a Crash
Under California Vehicle Code Section 20001, any driver involved in a collision causing injury is required to stop immediately, provide a driver's license and registration, and offer reasonable assistance such as calling for emergency medical help, according to legal guidance published by DCD Law. Failing to do so can turn a crash into a criminal hit-and-run case. A felony hit-and-run involving injury can carry up to three years in state prison, according to legal analysis from Kraut Law Group. DCD Law says the $1,000-to-$10,000 fine range applies to misdemeanor penalties.
Union City police are asking anyone who was in the area that night, or anyone with footage of the vehicle, to come forward. Officer Ivan Toscano can be reached at 510-675-5567, and tips can also be submitted to the Union City police tip line at 510-675-5207.
A Local Pattern of Youth Pedestrian Crashes
This is not the first time this year that Union City police have investigated a severe crash involving a young person. In September, Hoodline reported on a teen critically hurt in an Alvarado-Niles crash: the 14-year-old was riding in the front passenger seat of a Mazda that collided with a box truck.
The pattern also appears across Alameda County: bicyclists and pedestrians together are involved in 33% of fatal and severe crashes, according to a countywide report from the Alameda County Transportation Commission.
Union City adopted an updated Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan in November 2021, a framework meant to guide improvements to crosswalks and sidewalk connectivity across the municipality, according to the City of Union City. For now, the driver who hit the 15-year-old boy at Regents Boulevard and Kenwood Street remains unidentified, and investigators are counting on residents' doorbell cameras and dash cams to close the gap that darkness left behind.
