Randy K. Abro, a 41-year-old Utica man and father of two, has been identified as the victim of a fatal shooting outside a commercial warehouse near 15 Mile and Mound roads in Sterling Heights. Police say no suspects are in custody, and investigators believe the gunman fled in a 2025 black Toyota 4Runner with black rims.
A Daylight Shooting in a Busy Industrial Corridor
According to C&G Newspapers, officers responded around 2:15 p.m. on October 7 after a 911 caller reported gunshots in the area. Arriving officers found an adult male with apparent gunshot wounds, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The location sits in a busy commercial and industrial stretch of Macomb County, and FOX 2 Detroit reports the shooting unfolded outside a warehouse property just after 2 p.m.
Investigators have released surveillance images of the suspected getaway vehicle and say they are seeking two suspects who were seen fleeing the warehouse parking lot around the time of the shooting, per the same Fox 2 account. Police have not disclosed a motive, and it remains unclear whether Abro was specifically targeted or caught up in some other dispute. Anyone with information has been asked to contact the Sterling Heights Police Department Detective Bureau at (586) 446-2825, and officers say additional details will be released as appropriate, the C&G Newspapers report notes.
Remembered by Family at Chaldean Catholic Funeral Mass
Abro, the son of Kamal and the late Huda Abro, worked locally in small business finance, according to an obituary posted on Legacy.com. His Funeral Mass was held Saturday at Holy Martyrs Chaldean Catholic Church in Sterling Heights, as family and community members gathered to remember him as a married father of two.
Tracking a Black 4Runner Through the City's Camera Network
To locate the suspect SUV, Sterling Heights detectives are leaning on the city's automated license plate reader system, which includes 24 roadside Flock Safety cameras that capture snapshots of traffic on main roads in real time, Fox 2 Detroit reported. That surveillance push comes at a politically sensitive moment: the Sterling Heights City Council is scheduled to vote October 20 on whether to renew its contract with Flock Safety, a decision complicated by resident pushback, as C&G Newspapers has reported separately, with opponents arguing the camera network amounts to mass surveillance.
A Rare Homicide in Michigan's Safest Big City
The killing is jarring for a city that has built a reputation for safety. FBI Uniform Crime Reporting data released in September showed Sterling Heights was named Michigan's safest city with a population over 100,000 for the seventh consecutive year in 2025, recording just one homicide that entire year, according to the City of Sterling Heights. Federal crime statistics also show the city recorded 295 total violent crimes in 2025, a 3.3% decline from the prior year, compared with 681 violent crimes in neighboring Warren, with Sterling Heights also seeing a 50% drop in robberies, per a separate C&G Newspapers report.
Abro's death marked the second fatal shooting Sterling Heights police investigated within a three-day span. Two days earlier, on October 5, officers responded to a death on Erdmann Road off Clinton River Road, where a man was found in the front yard of a neighborhood; Hoodline previously reported that investigators preliminarily pointed to a self-inflicted gunshot wound in that case. The warehouse shooting also follows an August 14 incident near Hall Road, in which an 18-year-old was shot but survived, and police caught a suspect within three hours.
What Comes Next
Under Michigan Compiled Law MCL 750.316, first-degree premeditated murder or felony murder carries a mandatory sentence of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, according to the State Bar of Michigan, though that standard would only come into play once suspects are identified and charged. For now, detectives continue working to track the black 4Runner through the city's camera network as the search for the two suspects continues.
