A man was found shot in the front yard of a home in the 11000 block of Erdmann Road in Sterling Heights on Monday night and later died at the hospital, according to police. Officers responded to the scene at approximately 7:37 p.m. after a nearby resident called 911 to report hearing a gunshot.
First responders rendered aid at the scene before transporting the man to Henry Ford Macomb Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, as reported by ClickOnDetroit. Henry Ford Macomb Hospital is located in nearby Clinton Township.
Investigators Say No Ongoing Danger to Neighbors
Investigators said there is no apparent threat to the public, per the same ClickOnDetroit report. Detectives are still working to identify the man and notify his next of kin, and anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Frank Barabas of the Sterling Heights Police Department at 586-446-2800.
A Quiet Subdivision Near 19 Mile and Van Dyke
The 11000 block of Erdmann Road sits within the Dresden Village Subdivision, an established residential neighborhood near the intersection of 19 Mile Road and Van Dyke Avenue, according to real estate listings from Cappuso Homes. The subdivision features single-family homes largely built in the late 1950s, the listings note.
The shooting stands out against Sterling Heights' broader public safety record. FBI Uniform Crime Reporting data released in September 2026 ranked Sterling Heights as the safest city in Michigan among those with a population over 100,000, a distinction it has now held for seven consecutive years, according to C & G Newspapers. The city recorded just 295 total violent crimes in 2025, a 3.3 percent decline from the prior year, including only one recorded homicide, the newspaper reported.
By comparison, neighboring Warren, a Macomb County city of similar population size, recorded 681 violent crimes in 2025, more than double Sterling Heights' total, per the same C & G Newspapers analysis. A 2025 city resident survey found that 96 percent of respondents feel safe in their neighborhood during the day and 84 percent reported satisfaction with police emergency response times, according to the City of Sterling Heights.
Recent History of Isolated Gun Violence
While rare, gun violence has periodically tested the city's reputation for safety. In August, an 18-year-old man was wounded in a shooting along eastbound Hall Road, with Sterling Heights police making an arrest within three hours, Hoodline previously reported. In January, a shooting outside a house party left three attendees injured and led to charges including assault with intent to murder, though that case later cratered after a key witness failed to appear in court.
In July, a Center Line man pleaded no contest to charges stemming from a 2025 fatal shooting at an Extended Stay America hotel in the city, agreeing to a sentence of at least 22 years in prison in the killing of 24-year-old Jajuan Marls.
