A 25-year-old motorcyclist died Wednesday night after losing control around a curve on E. Fourth Plain Boulevard, crossing into oncoming lanes and slamming into a tree. The crash happened around 10 p.m. in the 1400 block of the busy Vancouver, Washington corridor, leaving the rider dead at the scene.
According to KATU, investigators said the man was riding east on Fourth Plain Boulevard when he lost control approaching a curve. From there, the motorcycle crossed into the westbound lanes before leaving the roadway entirely and colliding with a tree. He was pronounced dead at the scene, the station reported.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, and officials have not released additional details about what led the rider to lose control. The Clark County Medical Examiner's Office is expected to release his identity once his family has been notified, per the same KATU report.
A Stretch of Road With a History
Wednesday's fatal crash was not the first on Vancouver's roads this month. Just over a week earlier, on October 20, Vancouver police responded to a collision between a vehicle and a motorcycle at E. 37th Street and P Street, according to the City of Vancouver. In that incident, a vehicle traveling westbound on E. 37th Street was in the middle of the intersection when a southbound motorcycle struck its rear passenger side. The motorcyclist was taken to a hospital with serious injuries that he did not survive, while the driver stayed at the scene and showed no signs of impairment, the city said.
Vancouver's Traffic Unit said at the time it was continuing to investigate and was not releasing further information. That pattern echoes an earlier fatal crash from March 2024, when a motorcyclist died at the scene after a collision near Main Street and E. 15th Street. Witnesses in that case estimated the motorcycle was traveling 70 to 80 mph, the city noted, and it marked the third and fourth fatality collision the department's Traffic Unit had investigated that year as of mid-March.
Speed Has Been a Recurring Factor
Excessive speed has surfaced repeatedly in Vancouver's fatal motorcycle crashes. In a separate 2023 case, police said a motorcyclist was traveling roughly 30 mph over the posted limit when he struck a Ford F-150 and died at the scene, with KOIN reporting that investigators identified excessive speed as a causing factor in that crash.
No information about speed, road conditions, or whether another vehicle was involved has been released in Wednesday's crash on Fourth Plain Boulevard. The Washington Traffic Safety Commission, which compiles annual statistics on motorcyclist deaths statewide, has reported that motorcycle fatalities continue to represent a disproportionate share of the state's overall traffic deaths even as crash numbers shift year to year, according to the commission's published data.
Investigators have not said whether charges or citations are anticipated in connection with Wednesday's crash. As with the city's other recent fatal collisions, the Vancouver Police Department has indicated that updates will follow as the investigation continues.
