A man wanted on multiple felony warrants was shot by Larimer County sheriff's deputies in Wellington Sunday evening after he fled on foot during what had become an hours-long standoff at a home in the 8200 block of Fourth Street. He was taken to an area hospital for treatment, and authorities say no one else was hurt.
According to countryherald.com, deputies first attempted to contact the man shortly before 2:30 p.m. Sunday, October 25, at the residence. He refused repeated instructions to leave the home, the outlet reports, which drew out the law enforcement response for hours as deputies worked to resolve the situation without incident.
Around 7 p.m., the standoff took a sharp turn. The man emerged from the residence and allegedly fled from deputies, who pursued him on foot before encountering him in a nearby yard, per the same account. Shots were fired during that encounter, striking him, and he was transported to a hospital for treatment, according to the report.
Shelter-in-Place Lifted, No Threat to Public
In the hours after the shooting, nearby residents were placed under a shelter-in-place order as deputies secured the scene. KDVR reports that order has since been lifted, and that no other injuries were reported beyond the man who was hospitalized. The station also notes authorities said there is no ongoing threat to the public following the shooting.
Deputies were expected to remain on scene Sunday evening as the investigation continued, KDVR reported. The Larimer County Sheriff's Office confirmed in a social media post that investigators were processing the scene and said more information would be provided as it becomes available.
Independent Team Now Leading the Investigation
As is standard practice for officer-involved shootings in the region, the Eighth Judicial Critical Incident Response Team was activated to investigate, with the Loveland Police Department designated as the lead investigating agency rather than the Larimer County Sheriff's Office itself, countryherald.com reports. That structure is meant to ensure an outside law enforcement agency reviews the actions of the deputies involved.
Authorities have not released the identity of the man who was shot, nor detailed the specific felony charges tied to the warrants that brought deputies to the Fourth Street residence in the first place, according to the countryherald.com report. It also remains unclear whether any criminal charges have been filed in connection with Sunday's encounter.
