A 65-year-old driver was arrested after police say she ran a red light in a white Jeep Compass, struck a cyclist and several other vehicles, and then fled the scene in West Valley City on Saturday. The crash happened at the intersection of Redwood Road and 3500 South, and dashcam footage from a nearby vehicle reportedly captured the cyclist being hit by two separate vehicles during the chaos.
West Valley City police identified the driver as Kim Collier, according to KUTV. Investigators say the Jeep was traveling southbound on Redwood Road toward 3500 South when it ran the red light, striking a 43-year-old man riding a bicycle along with multiple other vehicles before the driver left before officers arrived.
Dashcam Footage Became Key Evidence
West Valley City police officers obtained dashcam footage from a nearby vehicle in the aftermath of the crash, and investigators used that footage to confirm the make and model of the suspect vehicle. The station's report notes the video was obtained from Collisioncam and reportedly shows the cyclist struck by two vehicles in the chaotic aftermath of the initial collision.
Police have not detailed how investigators ultimately located Collier or how much time passed before her arrest. The cyclist, meanwhile, was transported to a hospital following the crash and, per the same account, is expected to make a full recovery, though authorities have not released his identity or additional details about his injuries.
Charges Filed Against the Driver
Collier was booked on misdemeanor charges connected to the crash, including leaving the scene of an accident involving injury — a Class A misdemeanor — along with a traffic-control-signal violation. West Valley City police documented the incident under case number WV26-79230.
Part of a Troubling Pattern on Utah Roads
The crash adds to a string of recent incidents involving cyclists struck by vehicles across the Salt Lake Valley. In August, a cyclist died after being hit by a car near the Great Saltair, according to FOX 13 News Utah. A separate Salt Lake City hit-and-run left a bicyclist dead before the driver was arrested, as reported by KSL.com, and a fatal hit-and-run in South Salt Lake last month also ended in an arrest, according to ABC4. The Utah Highway Safety Office has noted that drivers were found at fault in more than half of cited vulnerable-road-user crashes statewide, underscoring the risks cyclists and pedestrians continue to face at busy intersections like Redwood Road and 3500 South.
