A man is dead and a suspect is awaiting extradition after Memphis police say a shooting erupted just after 1:30 a.m. Sunday at Yosemite Court and Millview Drive in Whitehaven. Officers arriving at the scene found a man suffering from a gunshot wound, and he was pronounced dead there.
According to Action News 5, police identified 's Darius Calvin as the person responsible for the shooting. Investigators said Calvin had also sustained injuries during the incident, and he was eventually located hours later at a hospital in Crittenden County, Arkansas, just across the state line from Memphis.
Calvin was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, employing a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony, and being a convicted felon in possession of a handgun, per the same report. He is now awaiting extradition back to Shelby County, where the case will move forward.
A Whitehaven Neighborhood on Edge
The shooting adds to a string of violent incidents that have rattled the Whitehaven area in recent memory. A separate triple shooting in Whitehaven, reported by WREG, left one man dead and two other victims injured after officers responded near a strip mall in the 3600 block of Millbranch Road, with the wounded taken to local hospitals in critical condition. It is not established whether that incident is connected to the Yosemite Court shooting or occurred on the same date.
Citywide Homicide Numbers Show a Mixed Picture
The Whitehaven case lands against a backdrop of improving, if still troubling, crime statistics in Memphis. The Memphis Police Department reported that the city recorded fewer than 200 murders in 2025, the first time it hit that milestone since 2019, alongside 643 shooting incidents last year, 400 fewer than in 2024 and a 38% decrease.
The Council on Criminal Justice found that reported homicides in Memphis fell 24% in 2025 compared with 2024, and that the city's homicide rate in the first half of 2025 ran 4% lower than the same stretch of 2024. Even so, that same homicide rate was 58% higher than in the first half of 2019, and the organization noted that Memphis's homicide rate remains among the highest in its study sample and is dropping more slowly than in other large cities.
Clearance Rates Climb in 2026
More recent figures from the Memphis Police Department point to continued progress this year. Part I Crime was down 36% year-to-date from April through June 2026, representing more than 4,000 fewer offenses than the same period in 2025, while the department's Homicide Bureau reported an 81% homicide clearance rate in the second quarter of 2026, up sharply from 47% a year earlier. The department also noted that burglaries, larcenies, and motor vehicle thefts all dropped compared with the second quarter of 2025.
For now, the Yosemite Court case remains in its early stages, with Calvin awaiting extradition to face the charges filed against him in Shelby County.
