The Sam's Club at 3801 Kell Boulevard in Wichita Falls is headed for its biggest transformation since it opened nearly four decades ago, with new filings outlining a $9 million remodel that will add 2,800 square feet to the warehouse store and strip out its traditional checkout lanes entirely. The plans, filed Wednesday, call for construction to begin in June 2027 and wrap up by November of that year.

The project is part of a sweeping companywide overhaul that Walmart Inc., Sam's Club's parent company, announced in April 2025. Walmart's broader plan, detailed at its Investment Community Meeting, aims to double Sam's Club membership and more than double sales and profit over an eight-to-10-year period by opening roughly 15 new clubs annually and remodeling all 600 existing locations, according to Produce Market Guide.

The blueprint for future clubs exists about 150 miles away. The Grapevine, Texas, Sam's Club — rebuilt and reopened in late 2024 after a 2022 tornado tore through it — now operates as the chain's so-called club of the future, running completely without traditional checkout cash registers, as reported by IBTimes. The Grapevine location has been described as a model for future clubs.

How the Checkout-Free System Works

The technology replacing cash registers pairs app-based Scan & Go mobile checkout with AI computer-vision exit arches that automatically match digital receipts as shoppers leave the building.

Shoppers have already been warming up to the app-based approach. Regular use of the Scan & Go feature reached one in three Sam's Club members in 2024, following a 50% surge in usage over three years, according to Grocery Dive. That adoption curve helps explain why the company feels confident phasing out physical registers across its fleet.

Where Wichita Falls Fits Among Texas Remodels

Texas Sam's Club renovation projects include a roughly $3 million Fort Worth remodel, a $5 million San Marcos project, and the $9 million Wichita Falls remodel.

Sam's Club isn't just renovating existing stores in Texas — it's also building new ones. The company is constructing a $24 million warehouse on San Antonio's Far Westside and a $49 million location in Richmond slated for completion in late 2027, according to MySA's reporting on the chain's statewide expansion. Those new builds, paired with the Wichita Falls remodel, point to a Texas investment strategy that spans both new construction and fleet-wide modernization.

A Four-Decade Fixture on Kell Boulevard

The Wichita Falls store opened on October 11, 1988, making it one of the market's longest-running big-box retailers. It sits on Kell Boulevard.

The remodel also lands amid shifting competition for price-conscious shoppers in Wichita Falls. Discount grocery options expanded in October 2025 with the grand opening of WinCo Foods, an employee-owned regional supermarket chain, at 3015 Wenonah Avenue. The Sam's Club overhaul will unfold alongside other major capital projects transforming the city, including the $452 million replacement facility for the North Texas State Hospital, which broke ground in 2024 and is also slated for completion in late 2027.

Sam's Club itself traces back more than four decades, and its membership warehouse model still defines the chain. Construction on the Wichita Falls project is set to begin in June 2027, with completion targeted for November of that year.
