William Shatner is set to receive the Los Angeles Press Club's 2026 Legend Award for Career Achievement and Contributions to Society, with the honor going to the 95-year-old actor during a gala downtown this December. The award recognizes a career that has spanned more than 70 years, much of it built around his best-known role as Capt. James T. Kirk in the original Star Trek television series and seven feature films.
The Los Angeles Press Club announced the honor, which will be presented December 6 during the 19th National Arts & Entertainment Journalism Awards Gala at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles, according to lapressclub.org. As MyNewsLA.com reports, the gala doubles as a fundraiser for the press club's charitable arm. The organization notes that the event has been a fundraiser for its 501(c)(3) charitable work since the National Arts & Entertainment Journalism Awards were established in 2008.
Los Angeles Press Club President Danny Bakewell Jr. did not hold back in describing the honoree. Bakewell called Shatner one of the most recognizable people in the world, adding, “He is in a towering category all his own.” The Legend Award itself honors an individual within the entertainment industry for venerable contributions to the industry, per the same organization.
A Career Well Beyond the Bridge of the Enterprise
While Kirk remains the role most associated with his name, Shatner's television résumé extends across decades, with credits including T.J. Hooker, Rescue 911, The Practice and Boston Legal. He has also worked as a director, producer and recording artist over the course of his career, according to the press club's own account of the honoree.
Shatner is also a prolific author, credited as the author or co-author of numerous fiction and nonfiction books, including the TekWar series and memoirs chronicling his life, career and years with Star Trek. Beyond entertainment and writing, he has supported charitable causes and taken part in equestrian sports, rounding out a public profile that the press club says made him an easy choice for a Legend Award built around career-spanning impact.
Shatner Joins Carlile and Brand in December's Honoree Lineup
Shatner won't be the only name on stage at the Biltmore. Brandi Carlile is set to receive the Visionary Award for Humanitarian Work, while KCRW's Madeleine Brand will be presented with the Luminary Award for Career Achievement in Media, both according to the Los Angeles Press Club. The National Arts & Entertainment Journalism Awards, which recognize excellence in arts and entertainment journalism, have previously bestowed the Legend Award on a roster that, per a press club search listing, has included Carol Burnett, Ann-Margret, Angela Lansbury, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Marla Gibbs.
Last year's Legend Award went to Paul Anka, according to a Los Angeles Press Club search-result listing. With the December 6 gala still weeks away, the full lineup of honorees and finalists for the 19th edition of the awards continues to take shape under the Los Angeles Press Club's banner.
