Marquette Park in Wyoming is getting a $2.2 million makeover expected to begin this fall, bringing an expanded dog park, a new shade shelter, a sledding hill and improved pathways along Plaster Creek to one of the city's green spaces. The renovation is the first phase of a larger two-phase redevelopment plan that traces back to a master plan drawn up more than a decade ago with input from residents.
According to MLive, the Wyoming City Council approved a construction contract with McGraw Construction Inc. on Sept. 21 to kick off the project. The park currently hosts soccer fields, a baseball stadium, a remote-control racetrack, a playground and shelter, and basketball courts, along with what MLive describes as the city's only dog park. Sources differ on the park's exact address: MLive lists it at 1251 Marquette St. SW, while WKTV Journal describes the 40-acre park as located at 1414 Nagel Ave. SW.
A separate account of the council vote, from CitizenPortal.ai, reports that the council awarded the phase-one bid to McGraw Construction with contingencies totaling about $2.2 million. That outlet's reporting indicates the work will involve removing a ball field, expanding the dog park, adding shelters and restrooms, improving parking and cleaning up the Plaster Creek shoreline.
What's Changing This Fall
The dog park expansion will include a new shade shelter, MLive's report notes, while crews add new and refurbished pathways along Plaster Creek and build a sledding hill on the park's east side. Deputy City Manager Nicole Hofert said the project also includes environmental work along the Plaster Creek shoreline, per the same account.
Investing in parks and trails is one of the top requests the city receives from residents, Hofert said. She added that residents most often request recreational facilities and want comfortable, safe outdoor spaces with varied amenities.
A Much Bigger Plan Down The Road
The $2.2 million renovation represents only the first half of a two-phase redevelopment effort rooted in that decade-old master plan. A second phase, planned for the next four to six years, is estimated to cost around $5 million and would bring a more elaborate expansion to the park.
That second phase is expected to feature a new pickleball court, a splash pad, a picnic shelter and restroom buildings, along with renovations to the park's sports fields. Combined, the full scope of Marquette Park improvements is expected to cost over $7 million, according to MLive's reporting.
For now, Wyoming residents can expect the first visible changes — the expanded dog park, new pathways and sledding hill — to take shape as the fall construction season gets underway.
