A 37-year-old man is dead after officers found him shot inside a home on the 2900 block of Richey Road in Yakima early Tuesday, and police have booked a 33-year-old woman into jail on suspicion of second-degree murder. Investigators say there are no other suspects in the case.
Yakima police responded at approximately 1:27 a.m. Tuesday to a report of a possible gunshot victim, according to bigcountrynewsconnection.com. Officers located the man inside a residence with multiple gunshot wounds, and officers along with responding medical personnel attempted lifesaving measures, the outlet reported. Accounts differ on exactly when and where he died: Yakima Herald-Republic reported he was later pronounced dead at a local hospital, while NBC Right Now reported that Yakima Police Capt. Matt Sutton said the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Coroner Describes Gunshot Wounds, Autopsy Set
Yakima County Coroner Marshall Slight said the man appeared to have been shot twice in the chest, and an autopsy was scheduled for Wednesday in Benton County, per the same Yakima Herald-Republic account. The woman, 33, was booked into the Yakima County jail on suspicion of second-degree murder Tuesday morning, the station notes. Police said in a release that there are no other suspects connected to the case.
According to the report, the killing appears to be a domestic violence case, as the man and woman were reportedly living together. KIRO 7 News, which also reported on the arrest, said the woman is being held on a second-degree murder charge at the Yakima County jail. Second-degree murder in Washington is defined under RCW 9A.32.050, the state's homicide statute.
Third Homicide of the Year in Yakima
The Yakima Police Department Major Crimes Unit is continuing to investigate the incident, the Big Country News Connection report states. The killing marks the third homicide in the city this year and the fifth in Yakima County, according to the Yakima Herald-Republic's reporting. It follows a Sept. 26 case in which a 53-year-old man was fatally shot in a home on South King Street, with a 28-year-old man charged with second-degree murder in that death, per the same outlet.
Yakima's homicide numbers have trended downward recently. The city recorded nine homicides in 2025, a decline from 14 the year before, making 2025 the second-lowest homicide count in the city in a decade, the Yakima Herald-Republic reported in a separate article on crime statistics. Four of those 2025 homicides were related to domestic violence, the outlet reported, a pattern echoed in this week's case.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Drew Shaw at 509-576-6791 or to reach out to Crime Stoppers of Yakima County, police said.
