At least 11 juveniles swarmed a store in the 3300 block of Columbia Pike in Arlington at approximately 9:43 p.m. Monday, with some of them stealing merchandise before two shoved a female employee to the ground, according to police. Arlington County officers responded to the scene and detained a group of juveniles tied to the robbery, though the exact number taken into custody has not been released.

Employee Knocked Down During Chaotic Scene

According to WJLA, police said the group entered the store and some of the juveniles made off with merchandise while two others pushed the female employee to the ground. Officers arrived and detained a group of juveniles connected to the incident, though authorities have not disclosed how many were taken into custody. As of publication, no charges had been filed and the investigation remained underway, the station reported.

Not the First Pack-Style Incident on the Corridor

This is not the first time a large group of young people has been blamed for a retail theft along the same stretch of Arlington. Back in August 2023, police said five to seven juveniles grabbed items off shelves at a Columbia Pike store and walked out without paying, and when an employee tried to intervene, a suspect threw items at the worker, causing minor injuries, per the same outlet's earlier report on pack-style retail theft in the area. More than a year later, in November 2024, four teenage boys were arrested after an alleged armed carjacking just blocks away in the 2500 block of Columbia Pike.

A Countywide Pattern of Business Robberies

Columbia Pike isn't the only commercial strip in Arlington that has seen this kind of trouble. In May, Arlington County police investigated three separate business robberies in a single day across the county, with suspects accused of taking merchandise and either using force or threatening employees in each case, according to ARLnow. In one of those incidents, on the 4600 block of King Street, two juvenile suspects allegedly took merchandise and one kicked an employee who confronted him, knocking the worker to the ground. In a separate case on the 1200 block of S. Hayes Street, a suspect reportedly concealed items in his jacket and made threatening statements before fleeing on foot, while a third robbery on the 3100 block of Wilson Boulevard involved a suspect who exited without paying, after which an employee locked the door behind him; the suspect implied he had a weapon.

Juvenile Arrests Rose in Arlington Since 2021

The Monday night robbery adds to a broader trend that has worried Arlington officials for several years. A WJLA report from November 2024 noted that juvenile arrests in Arlington County had risen sharply since 2021, though that year's total appeared on pace to come in below the 2023 figure absent a late-year surge. An Arlington County Police spokesperson has said the lower arrest numbers recorded during the earlier pandemic years reflected broader COVID-era impacts on both juvenile and adult crime statistics.

No details have been released about the identities or ages of the juveniles involved in Monday's robbery, the value of the merchandise taken, or whether the employee who was pushed to the ground suffered any injuries. Arlington County police have not said whether this incident is connected to the earlier Columbia Pike cases, and the investigation remains active.
