A Broader Pattern of Violence in Baton Rouge
The shooting adds to a year that has already seen significant violence across East Baton Rouge Parish. The East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner’s Office reported 88 parish homicides through Nov. 2, 2026. Earlier in the year, WBRZ reported that Baton Rouge Police recorded 42 homicides within city limits through June, up from 40 during the same stretch in 2025, with both homicides and non-fatal shootings trending upward compared to the prior year.
Homicide totals for the parish have varied depending on the source and date of reporting. WBRZ’s report also noted that the coroner’s office had recorded 61 parish homicides as of July 6, while the East Baton Rouge Parish District Attorney’s Office reported 54 homicides in the parish at that point in the year. For 2025, the Advocate reported a final tally of 94 parish homicides, while a separate coroner’s office figure listed 106 for that year with others still pending — figures that are not directly comparable given differing counting methods.
The Advocate also reported that Baton Rouge Police responded to 71 homicides within the city in 2025, a decline of around 12% from the previous year, and that the department’s homicide-case clearance rate stood at 62% for that year. The coroner’s office defines homicide as a medicolegal term for a death caused by another person, noting that some such deaths may be subject to criminal prosecution while others are not.
Scotlandville’s Recent History of Shootings
Monday’s shooting is not the first to strike the Scotlandville area or the Rosenwald Road corridor. In June 2025, WAFB reported that a man was found shot dead in Scotlandville, with family members identifying him as 22-year-old Victor LaPharaohs; that shooting happened around 3:15 p.m. in the 9900 block of Avenue J and Woodpecker Street.
