A 19-year-old man was shot and killed early Saturday near downtown Kalamazoo, and police say they still don't have any suspect information as the investigation gets underway. Officers responded to the 400 block of West Michigan Avenue, near North Park Street, at about 2:37 a.m. and found the teen suffering from a gunshot wound.
Officers immediately began life-saving measures, but the victim died from his injuries, according to MLive. The 19-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene, WOOD TV8 reported. His name has not been released.
Investigation Still In Early Stages
The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety said the investigation into the shooting is still in its early stages and that information about a suspect is not yet available. That early-stage status was confirmed in the same MLive report, which noted police have not released any details about who might be responsible or what led up to the shooting.
As FOX 17 West Michigan News reported, the shooting adds to an investigation already underway in Kalamazoo this fall. WWMT also reported the incident, noting that police were still seeking a suspect as of Saturday morning.
How To Submit A Tip
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the KDPS Criminal Investigations Division at 269-337-8139. Shootings Had Been Trending Down Citywide
The fatal shooting comes after a year in which gun violence in Kalamazoo had generally been declining. Records obtained by MLive show the city recorded 254 shooting or shots-fired incidents in 2025, fewer than in any of the previous eight years, with 40 non-fatal shooting victims — the lowest number since 2019 — and seven homicide victims, the lowest count since 2018.
KDPS has said violent crime reached a 10-year low in 2025, down 10% compared to a decade earlier, and that homicides fell 53% over the preceding five years. Officers responded to 122,024 police calls for service last year and seized 407 illegal firearms citywide, according to the same MLive analysis of department data.
Saturday's shooting was not the only recent gunfire reported in the city. A separate shooting shortly after midnight in the 1300 block of Portage Street left one man injured, MLive reported, and KDPS also investigated a shooting in the city's Northside neighborhood, where the public was asked to avoid the area, according to WWMT. It remains unclear whether either incident is connected to Saturday's deadly shooting near West Michigan Avenue.
