A 21-year-old man was shot in the right leg near East 187th Street and Grand Concourse in Fordham Heights on Saturday evening, and paramedics wheeled him out of a nearby deli on a stretcher before rushing him to the hospital. Police say he's expected to recover, but he isn't talking.
Gunshots rang out just before 6 p.m. Saturday near the busy Bronx intersection, according to News12. Investigators reported that the victim suffered a gunshot wound to the right leg, and paramedics transported him to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he is expected to recover. Citizen app footage captured the aftermath: the entrance to Lucky 7 Grocery on East 188th Street blocked off with crime-scene tape as the scene was processed.
Victim Not Cooperating, Key Details Still Unknown
NYPD told the outlet that the victim is not cooperating with the investigation, leaving officers with a thin trail to follow. It remains unclear whether the shooting happened inside the deli itself or who may have fired the gun, details the station's report said were unavailable as of Saturday night.
The shooting adds to a string of gunfire incidents that have rattled the same stretch of Fordham Heights over the past year, though nothing in the available reporting ties this weekend's shooting to any of those earlier cases. In June, a 43-year-old man named Amaury Toro was fatally shot in Fordham Heights and later pronounced dead at St. Barnabas Hospital, according to Norwood News. A separate Saturday night shooting in the neighborhood left one man dead and another injured after gunfire was reported at East 187th Street and Tiebout Avenue, per a News12 report on that incident.
A Pattern of Shootings Near the Same Blocks
Other recent shootings have struck close to the same corridor without any confirmed connection to one another. A double shooting left a 17-year-old boy wounded in the right shoulder and a 21-year-old man shot in the right thigh, both taken to St. Barnabas Hospital and expected to recover, according to ABC7 New York. In March, a 35-year-old man was shot in the torso near Creston Avenue and listed in stable condition, as reported by amNewYork. And in November 2025, two men in their twenties were shot near the Grand Concourse and East 183rd–184th Streets, one in the foot and one in the leg, both stable, according to Hoodline's earlier coverage of a Fordham-area shooting. That same report cautioned that none of those earlier incidents have been confirmed to involve the same suspects, weapons, or circumstances.
Crime Numbers Tell a Mixed Story
The backdrop to these incidents is complicated. Citywide, January and February 2026 saw just 83 shooting incidents and 97 shooting victims combined, numbers Norwood News described as record lows. Yet the same outlet noted that citywide shooting incidents ticked up 2.4 percent in February, from 42 to 43, while shooting victims rose 16.3 percent, from 43 to 50. Bronx-specific numbers moved in a starker direction: amNewYork reported the borough had logged 34 shootings year-to-date through Feb. 22, 2026, up 21.4 percent from 28 at the same point the year before, even as the 52nd Precinct reported just one shooting year-to-date as of March 1. Those figures cover different timeframes and areas and don't establish any direct trend for this particular block, but they underscore the uneven picture facing Bronx residents watching gun violence ebb and flow block by block.
For now, the Nov. 7 shooting near the Fordham Heights deli remains under investigation, with police working without cooperation from the one person who knows what happened.
