Auburn's last remaining Hardee's has closed for good. The restaurant at 800 Wire Road shut down permanently on Monday, November 2, ending the chain's presence in the city after the location had served as Auburn's only Hardee's since its downtown restaurant closed back in the 2000s.
A sign posted at the entrance thanked customers for their years of support, according to WTVM. By Tuesday morning, the station reported, the drive-thru menu boards had already been stripped bare, a visible sign that the closure was final rather than a temporary hiatus. The Wire Road restaurant had been operated by franchise group Phase Three Brands.
Where Auburn Customers Can Still Get Their Fix
The posted closure notice didn't leave customers entirely without options nearby. It directed diners to two still-operating Hardee's locations just over the city line in Opelika: one at 2530 Pepperell Parkway and another at 1902 Marvyn Parkway.
Those two restaurants are now the closest Hardee's locations for Auburn residents who want to keep their order going, though neither is actually within city limits anymore.
Part of a Wider Wave of Closures
The Auburn closure lands amid what the station described as a tough stretch for fast-food chains generally. Fast-food chains nationwide are facing economic headwinds, and franchisees have shut down dozens of Hardee's locations across the country over the past year, the station's report notes.
That pattern was already visible well before Monday's closure. Back in December 2025, dozens of Hardee's locations were set to close across the United States, according to USA Today. In that case, franchise group ARC Burger decided to shutter the Hardee's locations it owned after the chain sued over missed franchise payments and other contract obligations. Hardee's said at the time that those closures stemmed from ARC Burger's failure to cure defaults under its franchise agreements, despite what the company called solid sales.
Separately, reports in January said 77 Hardee's locations had closed across Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Missouri, Montana, South Carolina and Wyoming, according to PennLive. Another franchisee, Superior Star, closed more than 30 of its own Hardee's locations last year, citing reduced demand and industry-wide increases in food costs, before eventually filing for bankruptcy, per a separate USA Today report.
Nothing in the available reporting ties the Wire Road closure directly to those other franchisee troubles, and the exact reason Auburn's last Hardee's shut down hasn't been disclosed. What's clear is the outcome: after decades of serving the Plains, Hardee's no longer has a presence in Auburn at all.
