Preliminary vote counts taken Tuesday night show Dylan Pearson with a commanding early lead over Mike Harvey in the race for the Bakersfield City School District's Area 2 seat. As of 10 p.m. on Tuesday, Pearson had pulled in roughly 59% of the vote — about 1,600 ballots — compared to Harvey's roughly 1,100 votes, or 41%.
The figures, reported by KGET, represent only an early snapshot of the count taken Tuesday evening, not a certified final result. The contest is one of several local races that appeared on ballots across the county for the Kern County Elections office's November 3, 2026 general election.
Who Are the Candidates?
Pearson, a Democrat, works as a social studies teacher and basketball coach and is a newcomer candidate for the Area 2 seat. In his candidate questionnaire, he said he has lived in East Bakersfield his entire life and has lived in the specific district he's running to represent for two years.
Pearson said in his questionnaire that every child deserves “a safe school, a high-quality education, and the opportunity to succeed.” His listed endorsements include Andrae Gonzales, Manpreet Kaur, Eric Arias, Anthony Fuentes and Pam Baugher, according to the same candidate questionnaire reported by the station.
Harvey's First Run for Office
Harvey, a Republican and small-business owner, was making his first run for elected office in this race, the station's report notes. His endorsement list included State Senator Shannon Grove, Assemblyman Stan Ellis, and Kern County Supervisors Jeff Flores, David Couch and Chris Parlier, according to the station's report.
With the race still resting on early returns as of Tuesday night, the final outcome for the Area 2 seat had not been established. Voters and candidates alike were watching for updated counts following the initial 10 p.m. tally reported Tuesday.
