Memphis police are searching for a group of suspects who opened fire on officers trying to pull over a blue Honda Accord Friday night, sending a bullet into a patrol car windshield before the car sped away. No one was hurt, but the shooters remain at large.
According to Action News 5, officers attempted the stop in the area of Tutwiler Avenue and North Graham Street at 7:41 p.m. Friday when occupants of the Accord opened fire. The gunfire struck the patrol car’s windshield, but police say luckily no one was hurt in the exchange.
The Accord managed to evade officers after the shots were fired, and it has not been located since. It remains unclear how many suspects were inside the vehicle, and police have not yet released any descriptions of them, per the same report.
Backup Called, Scene Taped Off
Backup officers were called to assist with the investigation once the shooting was reported, and the surrounding area was partially blocked off with crime scene tape while investigators gathered evidence. Police have not disclosed why they attempted to pull the Accord over in the first place, leaving the circumstances that led to the confrontation unclear for now.
Investigators are asking anyone with information about the shooting or the whereabouts of the blue Honda Accord to call CrimeStoppers at 901-528-CASH.
Another Recent Memphis Pursuit Ended in an Arrest
Shots-fired incidents tied to vehicle stops and pursuits have cropped up elsewhere in Memphis recently. In a separate case, a robbery with shots fired in the city’s Grahamwood area led to a police pursuit in northeast Memphis on a Sunday morning, according to WREG. That chase ended at Elmore Road and Covington Pike, where one suspect was taken into custody; police said no one was injured in that shooting, though property was struck.
No such resolution has been reported in Friday’s shooting near Tutwiler and Graham. The Accord and its occupants remain unidentified, and the investigation continues.
