A 32-year-old Cleveland man was killed and a 62-year-old Cleveland woman was injured Saturday evening when their vehicles collided head-on in the Colony Ridge community south of Cleveland. The crash happened at approximately 7:13 p.m. at the intersection of County Road 3540 and County Road 3566, leaving one driver dead at the scene and sending the other to a Houston-area hospital.

According to Bluebonnet News, Sgt. Rob Willoughby said a 2009 Hyundai Elantra was traveling westbound on County Road 3540 when its driver failed to yield half of the roadway and drifted into the eastbound lane. The Hyundai then struck an eastbound 2014 Ford Edge, with both vehicles sustaining damage to their front driver’s-side sections.

Driver Was Not Wearing Seat Belt

Investigators determined that the Hyundai driver was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision, according to the same report. The 32-year-old Cleveland man was pronounced dead, while the Ford Edge’s driver, a 62-year-old Cleveland woman, suffered injuries and was transported to HCA Houston Healthcare Kingwood for treatment. The extent of her injuries was not immediately available, and neither vehicle was carrying passengers.

Pct. 6 Justice of the Peace Ralph Fuller conducted an inquest at the scene and ordered an autopsy on the deceased driver, per the report. The man’s identity was expected to be released Sunday, Nov. 1.

Multiple Agencies Responded To The Scene

DPS Troopers Corey Prantil and Courtland Friend investigated the crash, with assistance from the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office, the outlet reported. Colony Ridge, a fast-growing residential community south of Cleveland, sits along a stretch of rural county roads that connect to the region’s busier highway corridors.

The crash adds to a string of serious wrecks reported across Liberty County this year. Bluebonnet News also reported on a fatal accident on the Grand Parkway in Dayton earlier in October, while a 19-year-old Spring man was killed in a head-on crash on SH 99 in Liberty County in August. In April, a crash on FM 563 near I-10 killed four people, including two teenagers, according to CW39, and KHOU reported on a separate fiery crash along the Grand Parkway that killed two people.
