A Deming police officer shot and killed a man suspected in a homicide late Thursday afternoon, setting off a state police investigation into one of downtown Deming's most startling scenes in recent memory. New Mexico State Police confirmed the suspect died and said the officer was not hurt, but authorities have released little else about what led up to the shooting.
According to the Albuquerque Journal, New Mexico State Police said the officer shot and killed a suspect in a homicide, but the agency has not identified either the person killed or the officer involved. The Journal reported that the Deming Police Department did not respond to its queries about the incident. State police said they plan to release further details later, though no timeline has been given.
KOAT reported that the shooting took place on East Spruce Street and stemmed from a homicide that occurred nearby, near Spruce Street and Platinum Avenue, according to KOAT. The station said investigators confirmed the officer was okay while the suspect was deceased. The Journal separately reported that the homicide took place three blocks from the shooting site, at Spruce Street and Platinum Avenue.
Witnesses Describe a Woman Lying in an Alley
Witnesses in the area reported seeing what appeared to be a woman lying in an alley behind the downtown Wells Fargo bank, the Journal reported. No further details about that report, or about the nature of the homicide that investigators say preceded the shooting, have been made public. Authorities have not provided additional information about the circumstances of the homicide.
Photos taken Thursday and credited to Quincy Griffith show police tape cordoning off part of a downtown Deming parking lot after the shooting of the alleged homicide suspect, underscoring how much of the area around the incident was sealed off as investigators worked the scene.
A Pattern of Scrutinized Police Shootings in Deming
Thursday's shooting adds to a string of violent incidents that have drawn state police scrutiny in the small Luna County city in recent years. In November 2020, New Mexico State Police said 37-year-old Lorenzo Aguilar led officers on a high-speed chase exceeding 100 mph before crashing near Pine and Zinc streets, according to KRQE. That outlet reported Aguilar fired at officers, two Deming police officers returned fire, and Aguilar died at the hospital.
More recently, in April 2026, a standoff in Deming ended with two people found dead of what appeared to be self-inflicted gunshot wounds, the Journal reported at the time. In that case, the Journal said a U.S. Marshals Service deputy fired at one of the individuals, Joseph McDowell, after he armed himself, though authorities did not believe anyone was struck by the deputy's gunfire; McDowell, 44, and Cassondra Sauber, 42, were later found dead.
For now, the identities of the man killed Thursday and the officer who fired remain unconfirmed, and the circumstances of the homicide that investigators say triggered the shooting are still unexplained. New Mexico State Police have said only that more information will come as the investigation continues.
