According to a Denver Police Dept. post shared Wednesday, officers were investigating a stabbing in which one victim was transported to a hospital. The post also said a suspect was taken into custody and held for investigation of second-degree burglary while the kidnapping, assault and child abuse allegations were investigated.
In its update, titled “UPDATE 2/2,” the department said it was investigating allegations of “Second Degree Kidnapping, Third degree assault, and three counts of Child Abuse.” Police did not release the suspect's identity, the date or location of the incident, or further details about how the events unfolded. Officers directed anyone seeking more information to the Denver District Attorney's Office, writing, “Please reach out to the Denver DA’s office for additional details regarding this incident.”
A System Already Stretched by Domestic-Violence Cases
The case lands amid a documented rise in domestic-violence filings across Denver. The Denver District Attorney's Office filed roughly 12% more domestic-violence cases in 2024 than the year before, according to Denver7. District Attorney John Walsh told the station the increase has continued, saying, “We're still seeing an increase in 2025,” even as overall violent crime in the city has trended downward over the same period.
In response, the DA's office restructured its Family Violence Unit into two separate teams: a Domestic Violence Unit and a Child Victim Unit, the station reported. The Domestic Violence Unit handles felony cases where the offender and victim have had an intimate relationship and was working 420 cases at the time of that report. The Child Victim Unit, meanwhile, takes on felony cases involving victims under 18, including child sexual assault and child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury or death.
