Drive-By Truckers are set to play their first Heathens Homecoming West shows next week, bringing a tradition born in Athens, Georgia, to Portland's Revolution Hall for three nights starting Thursday. The Southern rock band has spent three decades churning out gritty, literate anthems, and now that tradition is crossing the country for the first time, landing in a city where one of its founders has quietly put down roots.

The shows run Nov. 12 through Nov. 14, according to OPB, and mark the band's first attempt at exporting the homecoming concept it has staged annually in Athens since 2000. Drive-By Truckers hail from Athens by way of Alabama, but the choice of Portland as a West Coast home base is not random — co-founder Patterson Hood has called the city home for the last 10 years, per the same report.

Hood is scheduled to join Oregon Public Broadcasting's Think Out Loud for a performance and conversation about his 30 years on the road with the band, a milestone that frames just how long Drive-By Truckers have been building the catalog they'll draw from next week. Think Out Loud broadcasts live daily at noon and rebroadcasts at 8 p.m.

Two of Three Nights Already Sold Out

Demand for the Portland run has been steep. Revolution Hall's own listings show the Friday and Saturday night concerts, billed as Heathens Homecoming West 2026 Night 2 and Night 3, marked sold out, according to Revolution Hall. The band's own website offered a slightly softer read on the situation, describing the Revolution Hall run as almost sold out rather than completely gone.

Beyond the two main-stage sellouts, the venue's listings point to a packed weekend of related programming. Revolution Hall has scheduled a Nov. 14 afternoon event billed as Patterson Hood in conversation with Willy Vlautin, with doors at 1:30 p.m. and the show starting at 2:30 p.m., restricted to guests 21 and up, per the venue's listing.

A Free Pre-Party and a Tradition 26 Years in the Making

The celebration continues after the main shows get underway. The Revolution Hall Show Bar is hosting a free pre-party showcase on Nov. 13 featuring Jerry Joseph, Drunken Prayer and Snarlin' Yarns, according to the venue's Show Bar listing.

Heathens Homecoming West is modeled directly after the band's annual Athens tradition, which began in 2000 and has become something of an institution in the band's hometown. A report on the most recent Athens edition described it as the band's annual return that blends deep cuts, fan favorites, and a spotlight on emerging talent, according to Appalachia Today. That outlet reported the 2026 Athens homecoming was a four-night stand based at the 40 Watt Club, with the band closing out the run on Valentine's Day.

The band isn't slowing down afterward, either. Its 2027 Athens homecoming is already on the books for Feb. 10–13 back at the 40 Watt Club, according to Jambands.com. The pace tracks with what Hood has said about his own touring habits in the past. In a 2018 interview, he told Street Roots, “I still play 100 shows a year,” counting both solo dates and full-band performances.

For Portland fans who managed to grab tickets before the sellouts, the weekend offers a rare chance to see a tradition usually reserved for Georgia audiences transplanted to the Pacific Northwest — courtesy of a bandleader who has made the city his own home for a decade.
