Recent Fatal Pedestrian Collisions in Escondido
Saturday's crash adds to a string of fatal pedestrian collisions in Escondido in recent months. In September, a 47-year-old man was killed after stepping into the path of an oncoming vehicle in the northbound lanes of Centre City Parkway near Ninth Avenue, as reported by the San Diego Union-Tribune. In a separate incident, a 65-year-old pedestrian was found gravely injured in the roadway at Escondido Boulevard and West El Norte Parkway and was later pronounced dead at Palomar Medical Center, according to 10News.
An earlier Escondido case bears an eerie resemblance to Saturday's crash. A vehicle struck 31-year-old Freddie Olmeda as he crossed West Ninth Avenue near Redwood Street outside a crosswalk, and the driver continued on and left the area, per The Coast News. In that case, a second vehicle also struck Olmeda while he lay in the roadway, but the driver of that second car ultimately faced no charges after telling investigators he was unaware his vehicle had struck the victim.
Investigation Continues
No arrests or charges have been announced in Saturday's crash, and the department has not released further details about either driver's identity.
