Phoenix is waking up to rain and a serious flood threat Sunday as a moisture-packed storm sweeps across the Valley. Showers will continue into the afternoon, with thunderstorms, gusty winds and as much as 1 to 2 inches of rain possible.

The forecast calls for a high near 72 degrees. Southerly to southwesterly flow is expected, while thunderstorms may bring brief heavier downpours and locally strong wind gusts, according to the National Weather Service.

Flood Risk Extends Into Sunday Night

A Flood Watch remains in effect through late Sunday night for Phoenix and much of south-central Arizona. The flood watch bulletin warns that excessive runoff could flood washes, creeks, streams, rivers and other low-lying areas.

Rainfall totals could add up quickly on already saturated ground, and runoff may keep waterways elevated into the first half of the week. Drivers should avoid low-water crossings and never attempt to drive through flooded roads, even if the water looks shallow.

Monday Brings A Fast Weather Reset

The rain is expected to wind down by sunrise Monday, with dry conditions early in the workweek. Monday night should be mostly clear with a low around 56, although patchy fog cannot be ruled out in sheltered parts of the Valley Monday morning.

Dry Weather Returns

Dry weather is expected to return Tuesday and continue through the workweek.
