A remodel and expansion is planned for the Walmart Supercenter at 802 E. U.S. Highway 80 in Forney. The project’s estimated $1.8 million investment would add space to the existing store and renovate part of its current footprint.
The project scope reported by inForney.com includes approximately 9,860 square feet of new space and a remodel of about 7,783 square feet in the 186,715-square-foot store. The location is Store 5191 and serves the 75126 ZIP code, according to Walmart. Wal-Mart Real Estate Business Trust is spearheading the development, inForney.com reported.
The reported construction schedule runs from April 11 to July 29, 2027, or roughly three months. The report says the work is expected to support construction-related jobs during that period and could contribute to ongoing employment and the local tax base after completion.
Why Walmart Chose to Expand Rather Than Relocate
The project would add to the existing Forney location rather than establish a new store elsewhere. The available project details do not state why Walmart chose this approach. The work comes amid other retail and dining development along the gateway corridor, described in a separate inForney.com report on the area’s retail growth.
A City of Forney agenda document notes that the property has shared access to the U.S. Highway 80 service road. The report says construction could increase traffic along the highway and advises residents to use caution near the site during the work. It also reports that city officials and developers are expected to coordinate traffic management as the project proceeds.
Part of a Bigger Walmart Push Across Texas
Walmart’s broader U.S. plans include both new stores and upgrades to existing ones. The retailer announced plans this year to open 20 stores and remodel more than 650 locations nationwide, according to USA Today. The report says the company has described the work as an effort to create jobs, support local economies and make shopping faster and more convenient.
The same USA Today report says potential remodel features include expanded displays and assortments, improved pickup and delivery services, and updates to vision centers, pharmacies, and store interiors and exteriors. Planned Texas remodels include locations in Corpus Christi, Houston, League City and Port Arthur; Walmart also plans a new supercenter in Celina and an expansion of a supercenter in Tucson, Arizona. The company opened nine new stores last year in states including Texas and had previously announced plans in 2024 to open more than 100 new stores through 2029.
Walmart’s broader store commitment
Separately, Walmart said it had committed in early 2024 to opening or converting more than 150 locations while continuing to update stores across its portfolio, according to Walmart. That company-wide commitment is distinct from the Forney project.
A Growing Town Behind the Investment
The timing lines up with Forney's rapid growth. The city could see its population climb to nearly 70,000 residents within the next decade, according to the Dallas Business Journal. Forney had already issued 117 residential permits in 2026 just four months into the year, compared with 272 for all of the previous year, the outlet reported.
That kind of residential expansion helps explain why a retailer would sink $1.8 million into modernizing an existing store rather than looking elsewhere. Residents curious about the pace of local building activity can also track monthly permit totals through the City of Forney's Building Permit Reports, which list permits issued each month by the city's Building Department.
