Four people are dead and five more wounded after three separate shootings tore through Dallas's Deep Ellum entertainment district within minutes of one another overnight, prompting police to shut the popular nightlife strip down until morning.
Dallas police said the violence unfolded in rapid succession, according to CBS News. The first shooting happened around midnight at a neighborhood convenience store and injured one person. Just minutes later, a second shooting broke out on Commerce Street and killed three people, followed quickly by a third shooting in the 2600 block of Elm Street that killed one more person.
Wounded victims from the shootings were taken to nearby hospitals, and the district was closed off for the remainder of the night as investigators worked the scenes, per the same report.
A Separate Shooting Wounds Four Men Nearby
In a shooting that authorities are treating separately, four men ages 17, 26, 28 and 35 were shot near North Crowdus Street and Elm Street, according to WFAA. The 17-year-old was reported in critical condition, while the other three were listed as stable. The station reported that no arrests had been made and that investigators did not believe the shooting was random.
CBS Texas said it plans to update its reporting as officials release more information about the overnight violence.
Deep Ellum's Long Struggle With Nightlife Violence
Overnight's bloodshed lands in a district that has spent much of the year grappling with gun violence. In May, a shooting on Commerce Street during Cinco de Mayo festivities injured five people, all of whom survived, and police later released surveillance video showing two persons of interest running from that scene, according to NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth. No arrests had been announced in that case as of the station's report. A separate shooting that same May weekend on Elm Street killed 26-year-old security guard Joseph Gray while he was trying to break up a fight at a club.
Gunfire struck the district again in August, when a shooting in the 2900 block of Elm Street wounded three people who all reached a hospital in stable condition, The Dallas Express reported. Police arrested Demond Hardy in connection with that shooting, and he faces four first-degree felony aggravated-assault counts, according to the outlet.
Police Task Force Expansion Proposed After Summer Spike
The repeated violence follows a broader rise in violent crime that Deep Ellum saw during the summer of 2025, which renewed concerns about safety in the entertainment district, according to The Dallas Morning News. The Dallas Police Department's dedicated Deep Ellum Task Force currently operates four days a week, Wednesday through Saturday, and made more than 550 arrests in 2025, the newspaper reported.
The Deep Ellum Foundation has proposed expanding that task force from its current four-day schedule to a seven-day presence by adding an eight-officer shift and another sergeant, the Morning News reported. Dallas police Chief Daniel Comeaux approved expanding the team to cover the rest of the week, with additional officers expected by June, the paper reported in a separate story.
