A man, woman and child were confronted by an armed suspect in downtown Minneapolis on Sunday afternoon near the 900 block of Park Avenue, and the encounter ended with the man shot and driving himself to a hospital while the woman and child escaped on foot. Police say the suspect forced the victim at gunpoint to drive about a block before opening fire on him.
A Car Approached While Dropping Off a Child
According to KSTP, the group was dropping the child off near the 900 block of Park Avenue when a man they knew approached the car they were in and threatened to rob and shoot them. Minneapolis police said the woman and child ran away from the vehicle after the threats, leaving the male victim alone with the armed suspect.
The station's report states the suspect then forced the male victim at gunpoint to drive about one block away before shooting him. Despite being wounded, the man managed to drive himself to a nearby hospital, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries, per the same account.
Suspect Fled on Foot, No Description Released
When police arrived at the scene around 3:25 p.m., they were not able to locate the suspect. Investigators say the suspect fled on foot back toward the original address after the shooting, though no description of the suspect has been released. Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact Minneapolis police.
How the Shooting Fits Into Citywide Crime Trends
The shooting comes as Minneapolis is seeing a mixed picture in its violent crime numbers for the year. Minneapolis police reported 25 homicides from Jan. 1 through June 30, 2026, down slightly from 26 during the same stretch in 2025, and robbery reports fell to 404 from 502 over that span, according to a separate KSTP analysis. At the same time, aggravated assault cases climbed to 1,518 from 1,346 the year before, and rape reports rose to 252 from 214, based on the same midyear comparison.
That data, drawn from a violent crime survey released Aug. 1 by the Major Cities Chiefs Association, was described as preliminary and had not yet undergone federal verification at the time it was published. It remains unclear whether Sunday's shooting will factor into any future tally, and no additional details about an arrest or the suspect's identity had been released as of publication.
