Johnson City police responded around 8 p.m. Thursday to a report of an aggravated assault on North Roan Street, where witnesses said a man fired a gun and pointed it at them before leaving the scene. Officers tracked down the suspect, 21-year-old Reece Chafin of Church Hill, and found him carrying a firearm. He now faces two counts of aggravated assault and one count of reckless endangerment.
According to WCYB, officers were called to North Roan Street after witnesses described a man firing a gun and pointing it at them before leaving the scene. Police said they recovered a bullet casing at the location, a detail that helped anchor the investigation as they worked to identify a suspect.
Per WJHL, officers made contact with two victims and witnesses at the scene on North Roan Street, and witnesses said the man had left on a white motorcycle. The outlet reports that officers later located Chafin riding that motorcycle at the intersection of East Main and South Roan streets, where they conducted a traffic stop and took him into custody.
Firearm And Shell Casing Recovered
Officers recovered a firearm from Chafin's person during the stop, and the shell casing found at the scene was also collected as part of the investigation, the outlet notes. No injuries were reported in connection with the incident.
Chafin was transported to the Washington County Detention Center following his arrest, per the same account. Police identified him as the suspect and were able to find him later with a firearm, as reported by WCYB.
The circumstances surrounding the gunfire remain under investigation, according to the report. The evidence available does not indicate the identity of the victims or witnesses, a motive for the incident, or the current status of the case moving through the courts.
