A 19-year-old man is dead after a shooting early Sunday morning in Kalamazoo’s Douglas neighborhood, near Ravine Road and Douglas Avenue. Officers found him after shots were fired in the area, and he was taken to a hospital, where he died from his injuries. No suspect information has been released as the investigation continues.
Exact timing of the shooting has varied slightly across local reports. According to WWMT, it happened shortly before 1:30 a.m. near Ravine Road and Douglas Avenue. WOOD TV reported that officers were called to the same intersection around 1:20 a.m. after reports of shots fired, while MLive put the initial call at 1:21 a.m., describing it as a report of shots fired in the 1300 block of Ravine Road.
The man was taken by ambulance to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, per the same MLive account. Investigators have not disclosed a suspect description, identity, or possible motive, and the outlet noted that no suspect information is currently being released as police continue to investigate.
Tip Line Open as Investigation Continues
Anyone with information about the shooting or any other criminal activity is asked to call the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety’s Criminal Investigation Division at 269-337-8139 or Silent Observer at 269-343-2100, according to the MLive report.
This was not the only shooting to hit Kalamazoo over the same weekend. Fox 17 reported that another man was shot around 5:10 a.m. Sunday elsewhere in the city, suffering injuries described as non-life-threatening. The station also noted that a third man was shot and killed early Saturday in downtown Kalamazoo, a separate incident from the fatal shooting near Ravine Road and Douglas Avenue.
A Pattern of Weekend Violence
The cluster of shootings echoes a similar stretch from late September, when WOOD TV reported that a 19-year-old was fatally shot early Saturday near West Michigan Avenue and North Park Street, and another 19-year-old was fatally shot Sunday morning around Ravine Road and Douglas Avenue, the same intersection tied to this latest case. A 20-year-old was also treated for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound near Slater Drive and Mt. Olivet Road that same weekend. Police said at the time that all three of those incidents were believed to be unrelated.
Despite the recent run of shootings, data obtained by MLive shows Kalamazoo’s overall gun violence trends moving in a different direction over the past year. The city recorded 254 shooting or shots-fired incidents in 2025, fewer than in any of the previous eight years, and 40 nonfatal shooting victims, the lowest total since 2019. Seven homicide victims were recorded in 2025, the lowest count since 2018, and February 2025 saw zero shootings citywide, a milestone the outlet called one not seen for years in the city. The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety said violent crime overall reached a 10-year low in 2025, down 10% compared with a decade earlier, per the same MLive analysis.
2026 Numbers Still Climbing
More recent figures suggest 2026 has told a different story. As of Aug. 29, Kalamazoo County had recorded 12 homicides for the year, including eight within the city of Kalamazoo, according to a separate MLive review of FBI crime data. That same analysis found Kalamazoo had the 10th-highest violent-crime rate per 1,000 residents among reporting Michigan communities, based on 2025 FBI statistics. No comprehensive count of 2026 shootings or homicides through Sunday’s incident has been made available.
