A 30-year-old Kansas City man is facing felony charges after police say he shot another man at Hidden Valley Park and fled the scene in a red Dodge Charger, leaving the victim in critical condition. Fabeik J. Maker was booked into the Clay County jail on Wednesday, November 4, and now faces first-degree assault and armed criminal action charges.
According to KCTV, the Kansas City Police Department said officers were called to Hidden Valley Park at 6400 NE Russell Road around 6:10 p.m. after callers reported hearing three gunshots and seeing a red Dodge Charger leave the park. Officers arriving at the scene found the victim unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the abdomen, and he was taken to a hospital in critical condition.
Witness Accounts and Video Point to a Red Charger
A probable-cause statement from the Kansas City Police Department laid out how investigators built their case, according to the station's report. A witness said Maker got out of a red car, shot the victim three times, then got back into the vehicle, while investigators said three gunshots could be heard before the passenger returned and the car drove off. A separate witness told detectives they had seen Maker and the victim fighting the night before the shooting.
Another witness reportedly handed detectives in-car camera footage that showed a passenger leaving a red Dodge Charger while holding what appeared to be a small firearm, per the same account. Investigators later located a Charger matching the description and tracked it by helicopter to Prospect Avenue, where officers took Maker into custody.
Suspect Allegedly Admitted Intent to Threaten Victim
Maker told detectives he had gone to the park intending to threaten the victim with a gun, the report states. He said he shot the victim two or three times and told investigators he threw the gun away while riding on Independence Avenue. A court subsequently issued an arrest warrant for Maker.
Clay County Prosecutor Zachary Thompson said Maker was charged Thursday, November 5, the day after his booking. A court set Maker's bond at $500,000, and his arraignment is scheduled for Monday afternoon, November 9. Thompson said first-degree assault carries a possible sentence of 10 to 30 years or life in prison, while armed criminal action carries a possible sentence of 3 to 15 years.
Second Shooting Reported Near Same Park Last Year
This is not the first act of gun violence reported near the park. KCTV5 reported that on December 31, 2025, two people were shot near Hidden Valley Park, with one victim seriously wounded. It is not established whether that earlier shooting is connected to this week's case.
Court records related to Maker's case, including future docket entries, can typically be searched through Case.net, the Missouri court system's online portal for public case records. Maker's arraignment Monday will mark the next step in the case moving through Clay County court.
