Komorebi, the Boston-area operation known for its omakase-style sushi and bento boxes, is preparing to open its first brick-and-mortar restaurant at 1378B Beacon Street in Brookline's Coolidge Corner. The new spot will be fast-casual and takeout-focused, with customers ordering at the counter rather than sitting down for a full-service meal.
Co-founder Steve said the team is targeting a December 10, 2026 opening, according to WhatNow. That timeline differs from an earlier report by NBC Boston, which noted that job notices suggested the location could open as early as mid-November. It's not clear what prompted the shift, but the December 10 date is the most recent target cited by the company.
From Pop-Ups to a Permanent Counter
Komorebi launched its business in 2024, beginning with online takeout, delivery, catering and pop-ups rather than a fixed location. The company was founded by a Boston College graduate and a Harvard graduate who aimed to make Japanese omakase more accessible to Boston diners, per the same account. Its menu draws inspiration from kaiseki, the traditional Japanese multi-course dining style, even as the brand has built its following around grab-and-go bento and sushi.
Steve said the Brookline location represents a shift from pop-up visibility to a steady physical presence, framing it as a chance to connect directly with the customers who have followed the brand online. “The Brookline store is our chance to welcome our regulars in person,” he said. The team is also reported to be in the final stages of licensing and permitting ahead of opening.
What's on the Menu, and When
The Beacon Street restaurant will include Komorebi's signature handcrafted bentos as well as an expanded selection of sushi, with menu offerings rotating seasonally. A sushi counter crafted from hinoki wood, a material prized in traditional Japanese kitchens, will anchor the space. Planned hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., covering lunch and early dinner rather than a late-night service window.
In an Instagram post, the Komorebi team described Brookline as its next chapter, telling followers the restaurant is opening soon. The company's Instagram account, @komorebi.bos, describes its offering as a “Kaiseki Bento Box” and “Premium Take-Home Omakase Bento” built around takeout only — the same format the brand is now bringing into a dedicated storefront for the first time.
