A 59-year-old man was stabbed in the neck just before 8:30 p.m. Monday on the westbound platform at Copley Station, and police say the man accused of attacking him was caught after trying to flee. The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was listed as conscious and alert with non-life-threatening injuries.

According to WCVB, the stabbing unfolded after the victim and the suspect had some kind of interaction outside the station that then moved inside onto the platform. The Boston Globe reports that the victim was transported to a local hospital, while WCVB reported that he was conscious and alert.

The attack happened on the westbound platform at Copley just before 8:30 p.m., as WCVB and NBC Boston reported. The suspect fled the station afterward, but MBTA Transit Police officers caught up with him and took him into custody. WCVB reports the alleged assailant was arrested by MBTA Transit Police and remains in their custody.

Boston Police Also Responded

Boston Police confirmed they responded to the scene as well, according to NBC Boston. No further details on the suspect's identity, age, or any charges have been released as of publication, and the circumstances that sparked the initial confrontation outside the station remain unclear.

A Mixed Picture On MBTA Safety

Monday's stabbing comes against a backdrop of mixed trends in transit crime data. Transit Police recorded 712 major crimes across the MBTA system in 2025, down from 823 the year before, the Globe reported in its March crime statistics coverage. Robberies on the system fell sharply too, dropping from 90 incidents in 2024 to 60 in 2025, per the same report.

Not every category moved in the same direction, though. Aggravated assaults actually rose slightly, climbing from 199 in 2024 to 204 in 2025. The Globe's data also showed no homicides reported anywhere on the transit system in either of those two years.

Other Recent Station Stabbings

Monday's incident is not the only stabbing to hit an MBTA station this year. A man was stabbed in the torso during an altercation at Ashmont Station in September, with Transit Police telling MassLive the attack was not a random incident. Detectives were still investigating that case and no arrests had been announced as of that report, according to MassLive.

That same MassLive report also noted a man was fatally stabbed at South Station on August 12. Separately, the Globe's crime-data analysis found about two dozen violent or property crimes recorded at South Station through most of 2025, down roughly 16 percent from the same period the year before. No additional details about Monday's Copley Station suspect or any pending charges had been released as investigators continued their work.
