Police said the shooting posed no threat to the public and confirmed the scene was secure, the station’s report noted. As of Saturday night, police had not said whether anyone had been arrested in connection with the incident, according to KVIA.
Few Details Released So Far
Beyond the timeline of the 911 call and the hospitalization, authorities have not released information about the man’s condition, what led to the shooting, or where inside the mall it happened. cbs4local.com reported that no other information was immediately available, with updates expected as more details are released.
Mall Has Seen Violence Before
Cielo Vista Mall was the site of a separate, more serious shooting in February 2023, when a fight between two groups of young men ended with one person killed and three others injured. As reported by elpasotimes.com, that shooting erupted when a person in one of the groups pulled out a gun and fired during a physical altercation near the mall’s food court.
Police at the time said the 2023 shooting was not believed to be gang-related, and an off-duty El Paso police officer working mall security arrested one suspect, with another taken into custody afterward. CBS News reported that a 17-year-old boy was killed and two others, ages 17 and 20, were wounded, and that a 16-year-old suspect was arrested after being shot and wounded by an armed bystander.
