A pedestrian is fighting for their life after being struck by a car just before 6 a.m. Monday near 59th Avenue and McDowell Road in Phoenix's Maryvale neighborhood. The person was rushed to a hospital in critical condition, and the driver remained at the scene to cooperate with investigators.
According to azfamily.com, police say the pedestrian was crossing the street mid-block rather than at a crosswalk when the car hit them. The outlet, part of Arizona's Family, first reported the crash in a brief video dispatch Monday morning as detectives were still working the scene.
Detectives temporarily shut down McDowell Road between 59th and 61st avenues while they investigated, the station reported, and the roadway has since reopened to traffic. No further details on the driver's identity or whether any citations resulted from the investigation have been released.
A Rough Stretch for Maryvale Pedestrians
Monday's crash adds to a string of serious collisions that have hit the Maryvale area in recent months. In October, a Hoodline report detailed a two-car crash near 87th Avenue and Thomas Road that left a man and a woman in critical condition and sent a child to the hospital in stable condition. That same report noted a hit-and-run near 67th Avenue and Thomas Road just thirteen days earlier that critically injured a minibike rider and hurt a relative, along with a September two-car crash at 59th Avenue and Thomas Road that seriously injured four adults.
Earlier this year, another Maryvale pedestrian was seriously hurt in a similar early-morning crash. Per KOLD News 13, emergency crews were called shortly after 5:30 a.m. to a crash involving a pedestrian near 83rd Avenue and Thomas Road, where the victim was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.
What's Still Unknown
No information has been released about the injured pedestrian's identity or age, and investigators have not said whether the driver will face any citations. The circumstances that led the pedestrian to cross mid-block, rather than using a nearby crosswalk, also have not been detailed by police.
