Portland Fire & Rescue confirmed the timing and location of the crash, according to KPTV, which reported that firefighters said the injured person was taken to OHSU with potentially life-threatening injuries. As of Thursday night, the station reported, the incident remained under investigation, and no further details on the person's condition or the circumstances of the crash had been released.

Separately, KOIN reported that Portland Fire & Rescue responded to the pedestrian strike near SE 8th and NE Division, with more than twelve first responders at the scene. The outlet said one person was transported to OHSU with life-threatening injuries, and that additional information was not immediately available.

A Crossing With a Troubled Past

The intersection has been the site of tragedy before. On June 18, 2025, a bicyclist was struck and killed by a MAX train near SE Division Street and SE 8th Avenue, the same crossing involved in Thursday's incident, according to KATU. TriMet told the station that a person on a bicycle entered the crossing at about 1:37 p.m. that day and was fatally struck by an Orange Line train.

MAX crossings elsewhere in Portland have also seen deadly collisions. On November 12, 2024, a person was struck by an eastbound MAX Blue Line train on East Burnside Street at Southeast 141st Avenue and died, according to the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office. Transit police later identified that victim as 61-year-old Anthony Davis of Salem.

No details about the identity of the person struck Thursday, the circumstances of the crash, or their current condition have been released. The investigation into what led to the collision at SE 8th and Division is ongoing, and officials have not said whether the crossing's history played any role in Thursday's incident.
