McAllen is heading into a sharp weather turn: temperatures could reach 92 degrees Thursday before showers and thunderstorms become increasingly likely overnight. The Rio Grande Valley then faces a wet, cooler stretch through the weekend, with heavy rain and flooding possible in some areas.
Thursday Heat Gives Way To Storms
Thursday will be partly sunny and unusually warm, with temperatures climbing near 92 degrees before easing into the upper 80s during the afternoon. A slight chance of rain showers arrives after 5 p.m., with east-southeast winds near 7 mph and a 20% chance of precipitation.
Rain Chances Build Overnight
Showers could develop Thursday evening, followed by a better chance of showers and thunderstorms overnight. The low will be around 73 degrees, while Friday brings a cooler high near 82 and a 70% chance of rain. North-northeast winds may gust as high as 21 mph Friday.
Weekend Looks Wettest
Saturday stays mostly cloudy with a high near 80 and a 70% chance of showers and thunderstorms, followed by an 80% rain chance Saturday night. Sunday looks cooler, with a high near 75, thunderstorms likely, and north winds gusting up to 24 mph.
The forecast calls for multiple rounds of rain across the Rio Grande Valley from Saturday through Sunday night. Atmospheric moisture will be high enough to support heavy downpours, and the area is under a marginal risk for excessive rainfall, meaning isolated flooding could develop if storms repeatedly pass over the same locations.
A Past Example Of Local Flooding
According to the National Weather Service Brownsville, rainfall from Hurricane Hanna on July 25–27, 2020, combined with poor drainage systems in Hidalgo and Cameron counties and left 18 inches to up to 4 feet of water in some areas between Santa Rosa/La Feria and east of Edinburg. The event shows how rainfall and drainage conditions can contribute to deep, localized flooding; it is a past example, not a prediction for this weekend.
Cooler, Drier Weather Follows
Rain chances ease Monday, when McAllen could see a high near 73 and a 30% chance of showers. Tuesday turns partly sunny with a high near 77, and Veterans Day should be warmer and mostly dry with a high near 81.
No watches or warnings are currently listed for the area, but residents should keep an eye on changing conditions this weekend. During heavy rain, avoid flooded roads and give thunderstorms room, especially if outdoor plans take you across low-lying parts of the Valley.
