Medway Middle School was evacuated as a precaution Monday afternoon after police began investigating a reported threat against the building, and within about 45 minutes, investigators determined it was a hoax. Police and fire departments had a large presence around the school in Medway, Massachusetts, as they worked to confirm there was no danger to students or staff.
Medway Police sent a community alert about the investigation around 1:50 p.m., according to MassLive. By 2:35 p.m., investigators had determined that the threat was a hoax, the outlet reported, and the school was evacuated as a precaution while officers worked the scene.
Police said more updates would be shared with the community as the investigation continued, though the outlet reported that no additional information was immediately available. Separately, Shrewsbury Post reported that school dismissal could be delayed because of the investigation, a possibility police raised as the response unfolded.
Police Say the Investigation Remained Active
Per the same Shrewsbury Post account, police said the investigation remained active and that additional information would be released as it became available. Neither report included details about who made the threat, how it was communicated, or what it specifically said.
Monday's scare was the second time this year that a Medway school building was emptied over a bomb threat that turned out to be unfounded. In May, Medway Police said a bomb threat called in on a Thursday afternoon to Medway High School was also a hoax, according to the Milford Daily News.
Earlier Threat Prompted Full Building Sweep
In that May incident, police and fire personnel conducted a full sweep of the high school building and grounds and found nothing, the Milford Daily News reported. Students and staff still inside the school at the time were evacuated, and all after-school activities were suspended because of the threat.
