Medway police say a suspect is in custody after barricading inside a home on Village Street following a reported assault involving a firearm, an incident that triggered an hourslong standoff with law enforcement before it was resolved without further violence.
According to Medway Police Department on Facebook, officers responded to a reported assault by firearm at 180 Village Street. The department said the suspect barricaded himself inside the home after the victim fled upon officers' arrival, prompting police to establish a perimeter around the property while the situation developed.
As the standoff stretched on, Boston 25 News reported that MetroLEC units, including a SWAT team, responded to the scene to assist Medway officers. The station also reported that police closed down Oakland Street around 10:30 a.m., asking residents to stay away from the area of the cemetery while the operation continued.
Suspect Taken Into Custody After Hours-Long Wait
Just before 1:30 p.m., police announced that a suspect had been taken into custody, according to the same Boston 25 News report. The suspect was removed from the scene following the hourslong standoff with law enforcement, per the Medway Police Department's account. Millis police provided mutual aid during the response, the department said.
Medway authorities reported there was no active threat to the public at the time. Officials told Boston 25 News there was no ongoing danger to the public, though the road would remain closed while an investigation was conducted. The Medway Police Department similarly said officers would remain on scene while the investigation continued.
What Remains Unknown
The Medway Police Department's Facebook post did not identify the suspect or the victim, and the department has not released details about the victim's condition. It also remains unclear what type of firearm was involved or whether a weapon was recovered from the scene. The Town of Medway issued a community advisory to residents regarding the incident, though the full text of that notice was not immediately available.
