Mesa is putting the finishing touches on Signal Butte Park's second phase, and when the ribbon gets cut Saturday morning, riders of all ages will get their first official crack at what Pillar Design Studios says is the largest asphalt BMX pump track in Arizona. The grand opening starts at 10 a.m. at the park's new area, located at 3355 S. Signal Butte Road, with professional BMX riders set to demonstrate on the track right after the ceremony.
The addition brings three distinct tracks to one site: a pump track, flow trails and a tot track built for younger riders. According to Signals AZ, the pump track was designed by Pillar Design Studios, which says it is the largest asphalt pump track in the state. Roxana Rojos Yantos, a project manager with Mesa Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities, said having all three tracks together in a single park is unheard of, and that the city is investing in people and the community.
What's New in Phase 2
Beyond the tracks, Phase 2 adds 1.5 miles of new LED-lighted walking trails, three ramadas and biking flow trails, the station's report notes. A new pedestrian bridge over a wash will connect the park's two sections, tying the fresh construction to the original grounds. The park also includes a trail looping around to its north side.
Sources differ on just how big the new footprint is. Per the same account from Signals AZ, the addition measures approximately 43 acres, while a project listing from ConstructConnect puts Phase 2 at roughly 46 acres. ConstructConnect's listing also noted that, as of October 29, 2025, construction was underway and scheduled to wrap by winter 2026.
Tracks Built to Last, With Rules Attached
Rojos Yantos said motorized vehicles, electric bikes, electric scooters and radio-controlled cars would wear down the track asphalt faster, which is why all of them are barred from the bike tracks. The tot track is intended for young children and other riders, giving the park's youngest visitors their own space separate from the pump track and flow trails. Anthony Campos, a 21-year-old East Valley resident, urged riders heading to the new tracks to wear helmets.
The first phase of Signal Butte Park opened in January 2020, bringing a custom-made playground, four ramadas and a one-mile lighted asphalt walking loop to the site, according to Signals AZ. Phase 2 was funded through a General Obligation Bond that Mesa voters approved in 2018, the outlet reports.
Saturday's Grand Opening Details
The free, family-friendly event opens to the community with a 10 a.m. program, after which the bike and tot tracks officially open to the public along with the walking loops connecting phases one and two. Attendees can expect Chick-fil-A and free smoothies, and contractors and subcontractors who worked on the project donated helmets and a bike for a raffle, with numbers called at 11 a.m. for anyone holding a golden ticket by that time.
The new entrance sits north of Fire Station 219 on Signal Butte Road, north of Elliot Road, and the city says it will have signage in place for the new area on Saturday. As 12News reported, the city of Mesa is formally unveiling the new additions this weekend, giving residents their first full look at a park that now blends playgrounds, trails and one of the state's biggest BMX features under a single address.
