A large gathering in a Minneapolis apartment lobby turned violent overnight Sunday when a 17-year-old girl pulled a knife during a fight, leaving a teenage boy and two teenage girls injured and landing the girl in juvenile detention. The chaos unfolded near 13th Avenue Southeast and Brook Avenue Southeast, where officers were flagged down by someone bleeding from a stab wound in the middle of the night.
According to KARE 11, a person with a laceration approached an officer near that intersection at approximately 1:19 a.m. Sunday. The injured person told police they had been stabbed and said the suspect was still nearby, according to the Minneapolis Police Department.
An officer then located a 17-year-old girl being physically detained by others at the scene, authorities said. That girl was later evaluated at a hospital. Police said she had pulled out a knife during the altercation, and she was arrested and booked into the Hennepin County juvenile detention center in connection with the stabbing.
Multiple Injuries Reported After Fight Spills Into Lobby
Investigators believe a large group had gathered in an apartment building lobby before the knife incident touched off several separate altercations, resulting in multiple injuries, per the same report. A 17-year-old boy was taken to a hospital with a non-life-threatening injury he sustained during the fight.
Two more teenage girls, both 17, also suffered injuries. One sustained minor, non-life-threatening injuries and was evaluated at the scene rather than transported to a hospital, officials said. The exact sequence connecting each injury to the altercation has not been detailed beyond what police have released.
Part of a Rough Overnight Stretch Citywide
The Brook Avenue incident was one of several violent episodes to hit Minneapolis streets within the same overnight window. A separate stabbing on Lake Street sent four men to the hospital just before 1 a.m. Sunday, according to FOX 9. Officers responding to that call found two wounded men near Lake Street East and 13th Avenue South, one with life-threatening injuries, while two additional men later showed up at the hospital with non-life-threatening wounds that police believe were tied to the same fight involving a large group.
Earlier that same week, two men were shot in Dinkytown and were expected to survive, FOX 9 reported separately. Police said those victims were treated at the scene before being taken to a hospital. The outlet also noted a stabbing near 4th Street Southeast and 13th Avenue Southeast around 2:30 a.m. Friday, which officials attributed to an altercation between two people.
No further details have been released on the condition of the injured teens from the Brook Avenue Southeast incident, and police have not said whether additional charges are expected beyond the arrest already made.
