A motorcyclist died after a crash on Shennecossett Road in Groton Saturday night, and police still haven't said what caused it. The rider was alone on the bike and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.
The City of Groton Police Department is investigating the crash alongside the Southeastern Connecticut Regional Traffic Unit, as reported by News-Times. Police described the incident as a collision but have not specified exactly when it occurred or whether another vehicle was involved. The motorcycle operator's identity is being withheld pending a preliminary investigation and notification of next of kin, according to Patch.
Road Closures Possible As Investigation Continues
Drivers in the area should expect some disruption. NBC Connecticut reports that Shennecossett Road may see temporary closures and delays while police continue working the scene. The station also confirmed that the motorcycle operator was the sole occupant of the vehicle at the time of the crash.
Police are asking anyone with information about the crash to call the City of Groton Police Department at (860) 445-2451. The investigation remains active, and no further details about the circumstances leading up to the crash have been made public.
Part of a Troubling Statewide Pattern
The Groton death adds to what Connecticut officials have described as a sharp rise in motorcycle fatalities this year. State police reported 17 fatal motorcycle collisions on state roads so far in 2026, compared with eight during the same period in 2025 — a 112% increase, according to WTNH. Separately, the Hartford Courant reported that as of July 19, Connecticut had recorded 32 motorcycle-related fatalities statewide, up from 22 during the same stretch the previous year.
Notably, overall roadway fatalities in Connecticut have actually declined this year, with 114 reported compared to 123 during the same period in 2025, according to the Hartford Courant. The Connecticut Department of Transportation has pointed to increased warm-weather activity as a factor, noting that more people are out walking, biking and riding motorcycles when conditions improve.
The scale of the recent surge has been described differently across reports. The Courant reported that at least seven people were injured and four were killed in six separate motorcycle crashes over a single weekend, while WTNH reported that three people died in motorcycle crashes during that same Friday-to-Monday window. Fatal motorcycle crashes elsewhere in the state this year have included a rider killed in a collision with a pickup truck on Route 66 near Saner Road in Marlborough, as well as deadly crashes in Danbury, Waterbury and Manchester, per WTNH's reporting.
No additional details about the Groton crash have been released as the investigation continues. Anyone who witnessed the crash or has relevant information is urged to come forward to local police.
