A Guadalupe County jury has sentenced Isaac Mesa Jr., 27, to 20 years in prison for fatally shooting fellow New Braunfels resident Adrian Barbosa on North River Street in Seguin in 2023. Jurors convicted Mesa of murder on Wednesday before returning the sentence after deliberations that stretched from Friday into Monday morning, closing out a trial that began with jury selection on October 19.
According to the Seguin Gazette, the jury heard punishment arguments Thursday before landing on the 20-year term. The outlet's account places the shooting after 2 a.m. on September 2, 2023, and KSAT reported that it happened at 2:11 a.m. that day in the 100 block of North River Street. Both reports describe Mesa Jr. as 24 at the time of the shooting.
The Night Barbosa Was Shot
Police found Barbosa on the ground with a gunshot wound, and Seguin police and emergency medical personnel attempted life-saving measures, but he died at the scene. KSAT reported that officers arrived to find 36-year-old Barbosa already wounded and that he could not be saved despite those efforts. Seguin police later identified Mesa Jr. as a suspect, and Guadalupe County Sheriff's Office deputies arrested him on a murder charge and took him to the Guadalupe County Jail.
A Sister Says the Sentence Isn't Enough
Karina Maldonado, Barbosa's younger sister, told the Gazette that her family was unhappy with the outcome and believes a term of 60 years or more would have been more appropriate. She said her family must now cope with never seeing her brother again, and that Barbosa's five children will grow up without their father, missing milestones like marriages or graduations that he won't be there to share.
The Defendant's Father Speaks
Isaac Mesa Sr. told the paper that his family must cope with his son's incarceration, though he believes events could have been worse. He said that things would have been better for everyone had the shooting turned out differently, and that the sentence has left two families reeling — one grieving a death, the other facing decades with a family member behind bars.
How It Compares to Other Guadalupe County Cases
Mesa's 20-year sentence sits well below some other murder punishments handed down in Guadalupe County over the years. In 1992, a jury sentenced Guadalupe Chino Sandoval to 75 years in prison and a $10,000 fine for murdering 15-year-old Eglena “E.G.” Diaz DeLeon, according to the Seguin Gazette. More recently, Michael Lewis Arce received a life sentence after a capital murder conviction in the 2015 slaying of his girlfriend, per another Gazette report. Those cases do not establish any broader sentencing pattern for the county, but they underscore how wide the range of outcomes can be in local murder trials.
