North Lakeland residents now have a round-the-clock emergency room just off Lakeland Park Center Drive. Orlando Health Watson Clinic Lakeland Highlands Hospital opened its freestanding emergency department on Wednesday, bringing 18 private treatment rooms, on-site imaging and a resuscitation room to a part of Polk County that has been waiting on the project for years.

The new ER sits at 963 Lakeland Park Center Drive, inside the Lakeland Park Center shopping plaza, according to WFTV. The facility is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and includes cardiac monitoring, a dedicated resuscitation room and a full-service lab, the station reports. On-site imaging covers CT scans, ultrasound and X-rays, meaning many patients can get diagnostic answers without leaving the building.

For cases that require a higher level of care, the ER has transfer arrangements already in place. Adults needing further treatment can be sent to Lakeland Highlands Hospital or to Orlando Health's Level I trauma center in Orlando, while children can be transferred to Lakeland Highlands Hospital or Orlando Health Children's Arnold Palmer Hospital in Orlando, per the hospital's account relayed by the station's report.

A Three-Year Path From Announcement To Opening

Orlando Health first floated the project back in 2023, and the station notes that the opening date had not yet been set when plans were unveiled. The health system's own announcement, dated Dec. 19, 2023, described a planned 20,800-square-foot building with capacity for up to 24 exam rooms, an imaging suite, a lab and an ambulance bay, according to Orlando Health. Construction was expected to begin in 2024, the announcement said.

At the time, Orlando Health senior vice president Matt Taylor pointed to population growth as the driving force behind the project. “As a result, the demand for accessible and high-quality healthcare continues to grow in this area,” Taylor said, according to the hospital system's announcement. Orlando Health says it already operates five freestanding ERs and continues opening more across Central Florida, each staffed by board-certified emergency medicine doctors and nurses and offering 24/7/365 access to care.

One Of Several Emergency Projects Competing For Lakeland Patients

The North Lakeland facility is part of a broader buildout of emergency care options in the area. The Ledger described the Orlando Health project in 2023 as the third freestanding emergency room planned north of Interstate 4 in a little over a year, with the proposed facilities situated roughly 2.7 miles apart from one another.

Among those other projects is an HCA Florida emergency department planned near U.S. Highway 98 and Carpenters Way. City of Lakeland records show the proposed 11,570-square-foot building was slated for a roughly 2.9-acre site at the northeast corner of U.S. 98 North and Carpenters Way, replacing a vacant former bank, according to an ordinance from the City of Lakeland that was passed and certified on Oct. 16, 2023. City planning staff estimated that project would generate about 289 daily vehicle trips and 18 during the p.m. peak hour, well below the 457 daily and 96 peak-hour trips estimated for the drive-in bank that previously occupied the site.

Separately, Lakeland Regional Health received city commissioners' approval in September 2022 to add a freestanding hybrid emergency department and urgent care center at its Kathleen Campus, the Ledger reported. LkldNow has reported that, at one point, two full hospitals and six additional freestanding emergency rooms were in the pipeline across Lakeland as four hospital systems expanded into the market — a sign of just how quickly emergency care options have been multiplying in Polk County even as individual projects like this one took years to materialize.
