Neighbors on the 9800 block of Sunset Boulevard, southeast of Lamont, reported hearing gunfire Tuesday evening, setting off a Kern County Sheriff's Office investigation that ended with two men in handcuffs and nine firearms pulled from their properties. Deputies say 25-year-old Bryan Trujillo and 63-year-old Angel Torres both denied hearing any gunshots or having anything to do with a shooting — but a search warrant served at their homes told a different story.
Deputies responded to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon after neighbors reported gunshots, according to the Kern County Sheriff's Office, as reported by KGET. The call came in around 6 p.m. from the 9800 block of Sunset Boulevard, with witnesses in the area telling deputies they heard gunfire coming from a residence on the street. The sheriff's office said deputies were called to the location on Tuesday, southeast of Lamont, according to BakersfieldNow.
Search Warrant Turns Up Nine Firearms
After interviewing Trujillo and Torres, investigators said the two men conspired to negligently discharge a firearm from their properties, per the sheriff's office account relayed by KGET. Deputies then obtained and served a search warrant at the homes, where they located nine firearms, numerous rounds of ammunition, and shell casings across both residences and yards, the outlet reported. No injuries were reported in connection with the incident.
Following the search, Trujillo and Torres were arrested and booked into the Sheriff's Office Lerdo Receiving Facility, the station's report states. The sheriff's office has not detailed specific charges filed against the two men beyond describing the underlying allegation as negligent discharge of a firearm.
A Pattern of Shots-Fired Calls Near Lamont
This is not the first time a gunfire report has led Kern County deputies to a weapons cache in the Lamont area. In January, deputies from the sheriff's office's Lamont Substation responded to a report of shots fired near Weedpatch Highway and Kam Avenue, on the community's northern outskirts, according to BakersfieldNow. Deputies there found a large party at a home in the 8400 block of Kam Avenue along with fresh spent shell casings, and a subsequent search warrant turned up a concealed AK-47 rifle, a 1911-style handgun, two additional handguns, and live ammunition. Nineteen-year-old Cliserio Urias was arrested and booked into the Lerdo Justice Facility on firearm-related charges in that case.
A similar scenario played out in September 2025, when deputies responded to reports of gunfire on the 8900 block of Jeffry Avenue in Lamont around 2:30 a.m., BakersfieldNow reported separately. Deputies discovered numerous spent casings in the street and in the front yard of a nearby home, and a search warrant allegedly uncovered three firearms and ammunition matching the casings found at the scene. Authorities arrested 37-year-old Celso Benigno on several charges in that case, including illegal discharge of a firearm and possession of a stolen firearm.
